New high end cpu +motherboard +ram or old higher end cpu without having to upgrade mobo/ram?

Hey, i might buy a gtx 1080ti when its released. According to nvidia its 35% stronger than a gtx 1080 so thats a lot of graphical power especially if i buy an aftermarket one and overclock it. I play on a 240hz 1080p monitor so im all about high framerates, therefore its even more important i dont have a cpu bottleneck. Right now i got an intel 4670k (socket 1150, motherboard chipset z87) overclocked to 4.2 ghz. I dont know if i should buy a kaby/skylake/ryzen cpu which will need a whole new motherboard and maybe even new ram (considering i have ddr3 ram) or if i should buy a higher end 1150 socket cpu??? Like a 4790k? Will it even work or be overclockable with my current chipset? Apreciate any help and sorry for my crappy english

A 4790k is compatible with your motherboard, but you should update the BIOS to make absolutely sure. However, why not just buy the 1080ti and see how it goes with your current system? It should work great - a 4670k @4.2ghz is a great chip for gaming and I doubt you'll see any problems at all running it with a 1080ti. There isn't a huge difference between your current system and a brand new Intel Skylake/Kaby Lake system. The benchmarks presently show Ryzen to be a little behind Intel's Kaby Lake in gaming, and AMD hasn't released the more-affordable six and four core Ryzen chips yet so I'd hold back and wait. Personally I'd keep the current setup, get the 1080ti and see how it goes.

I really doubt the CPU you currently have will be bottlenecked by the 1080Ti. I agree with Larkspur, get your 1080 and see how it goes from there.

I got a z87 and a 4670 non k and would run a 1080 with it even if you get some bottlenecking it will not be sever enough o make a big difference something's all ways going to bottleneck something ,heck would not hurt my feeling to use the 1080ti

this 980 ti even overclocked works great + you can overclock your cpu to give it the extra boost ?

4670k to a 4970k ? not wrth it and they trend to run hotter [why there called devils canyon not artic tundra ] and a lot of threads here at toms on that hot thing with them

in the end that all your choice and money on your own personal preference on what you feel is best for you

I would not trust ryzen in till I see a lot of enduser input and reviews in like 6 or 8 months like the guinney pigs first release suckers work it all out at there expense

Just compare 4690k (its almost the same as 4670k right?) with 7700k and you will see quite a big difference in some titles, (more than 30fps boost in some). Also fiy, im currently running two gtx 770 in sli which is great when it works, but my 2gb vram is quite a bottleneck in many new titles and sli is rarely supported plus it causes stuttering/flickering and other graphical issues in many games, so for me, a 1080ti would be a huge upgrade.

your right, i could see how it works first. But i do know that my cpu does sometimes bottleneck my current gpus (2x770 2gb in sli). I remember my fps being cut in half when entering novigrad in witcher 3, a city which is filled with npc:s (cpu would run at 100% and gpus only at 50-60%). High fps 1080p gaming is quite cpu intensive, and check the gamernexus link I posted in another answer.

are yopu sure it bottlenecking or just NVidia SLI issues ???

then results above also have sli scores I just posted one card use change that to ANY and you will get sli scores .. SLI is is not being supported as it use to be like with the 10 series just 2 way is now truly supported . its getting like no one want to deal with it anymore

ya , then scores are off 1080 runs but you can change them to like firstrike ultra scores for the heaver 4k test thing ???

try the dx 12 timespy as well ? thing is I use non overclocking CPU's so there overclocking don't affect the GPU performance in the scores

I just tried witcher 3 with sli turned off in novigrad and got 100% cpu usage and about 90% average usage on my single 770 (which should run at 99%.). When i get low gpu usage i usally assume its bad sli scaling but while playing witcher 3 i payed attention to the cpu usage and noticed the bottleneck. Might have had same problem with other games but thought it was bad sli scaling because i didnt pay attention to the cpu usage

Edit: ive googled a little and it seems to be a specific problem with witcher 3 in novigrad as many other have the same cpu usage problem. Like larkspur suggested, im just gonna get a 1080ti and see how it works. Gonna use afterburner and pay much more attention to the cpu usage and then decide if i need an upgrade.
