Hello all,

Building a PC for a friend and wanted to stay in a 800$ range. Not gaming or anything crazy but may do some light photo editing and use for work so Citrix workspace or Teams Ect. Looking to push a good-looking resolution. Here is my current build, let me know how I can improve my Video if any at all.

Few words;

CPU - Unless you can give exceptionally good reason why build has to contain Core i9, there is no point going for one. Based on description, build is used as an office PC, where Core i3 would be more than enough. But put in Core i5 for a bit better performance. Still, way too much for any office build.

CPU cooler - Since CPU is i5-11400, CPU cooler comes with it. So, no need to waste money on aftermarket CPU cooler.

MoBo, RAM - Didn't change those.

SSD - Build didn't have OS drive. So, put in great M.2 drive from Samsung. 1TB in size. (I have very same drive as my OS drive but mine is 2TB.) 2TB drive costs 97 bucks. If no OS drive is needed, remove it and save 70 bucks.

GPU - Changed it to better performing GPU thanks to money saved on CPU. GTX 1650, while miles better than GT 1030, can actually do comfortable gaming at 1080p reso.
GT 1030 vs GTX 1650 comparison: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GT-1030-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1650/m283726vs4039
GPU max digital reso is 8K (7680x4320). So, if no gaming is done on the PC, you can use up to 8K monitor just fine with this GPU. On top of that, GPU also has a white shroud, matching the MoBo heatsinks (nice black&white theme)
GPU specs: https://www.msi.com/Graphics-Card/GeForce-GTX-1650-D6-VENTUS-XS-OCV1

PC case - Didn't change it. Also since it's personal choice and others can't pick the case for someone else. Though, cute pink case. I guess your friend is female.

PSU - Put in good quality Seasonic unit. In 650W range since it's cheaper that 550W unit. Thing with PSU is, that since it powers everything, it is the most important component inside the PC. And thus, you'll never want to cheap out on PSU, like you tried with the low quality, borderline crap quality Tt Smart series PSU. If your PSU is crap, then none of the other components matter. Because when low quality PSU dies, it has the magical ability to fry everything it is connected to (aka the whole PC). Heck, i wouldn't even suggest using low/crap quality PSU for my worst enemy, let alone to a friend.

Build comparison;
Your initial build as Baseline, my refined build as Alternative:

Userbenchmark PC Build Comparison

Baseline Bench: Game 24%, Desk 99%, Work 25%
CPU: Intel Core i9-10850K
GPU: Nvidia GT 1030
SSD: Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3600 C18 2x16GB

Alternative Bench: Game 49%, Desk 101%, Work 46%
CPU: Intel Core i5-11400
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1650
SSD: Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3600 C18 2x16GB

Note: Since your build didn't contain SSD, i had to include it in the build comparison for results to be shown. Put in the same SSD as in my refined build for equal comparison.

My refined build is more balanced overall and does better in all metrics: gaming use, desktop (office) use and workstation use. While costing the same as your initial build (or less, if you remove SSD). Also, looks a bit better since GPU matches MoBo.

Can certainly do better than 1650 and 11th gen for $800

If you want it under $800, swap in the RX6600 instead. 6650XT is about as fast as an RX7600/RTX4060. This is 1080p gaming high settings on most games, vs 1080p medium/low settings with a GTX1650.

You did read what OP said, right?
Not gaming or anything crazy

It's getting annoying actually. :cautious: OP specifically said that the build isn't for gaming, instead of office use. Yet @Eximo how come you suggest a gaming build for them? Does what OP says matter at all?
TH Ambassador should know better.

To be fair the OP did mention light photo editing, but that doesn't necessarily need a 1650.

Yes, GTX 1650 is too much for photo editing but since OP asked for better GPU, next step up from GT 1030 would've been GTX 1630. But since GTX 1630 costs the same as GTX 1650, i put GTX 1650 in. Better performance with same amount of money. Who wouldn't want that?

I did miss that, still, results in a better performing system all around for about the same cost. I was more focused on the 11400 at 171.99 when 12th gen chips are only $10 more.
Though perhaps swap out the RX card for an RTX3050 for CUDA acceleration, depending on the software. Not a lot of difference between a decent gaming rig and a consumer grade workstation after all.

Might also be a good 5700G situation and scrap the GPU altogether to save a few hundred.

i7-13700F and Arc A380 perhaps. Arc has been getting better productivity support as of late. Largest inexpensive GPU on the market and it does just fine on the desktop for general purposes. (I have one)

A little overbudget, but having 8P and 8E cores might come in handy.
