Ok everybody. As the title states i have a new in box i7 960. I would like to build a new system for gaming. I have no case anymore so that is the only component i have . I was going to build this system 4 years ago but now i am ready. What should i do? Do i use this processor? Or just start completely from scratch? My budget is 750 for everything including case. Any help would be great.

Solution
with 750 $ you can buy a decent configurtaion gaming pc having the capability to play all 2016 games at 1080p resoultion .
i5 6500 - 200$
Gigabyte H110M-A DDR4 -59$
RAM 8GB - 50$
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 Mini 6GB GDDR5 Super Compact Graphics Card - 240$
Seagate 1TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 7200RPM - 50$
casing choose any brand casing - 34$
Seasonic S12II 520 Watt BRONZE, SS-520GB Power Supply - 47$
sandisk ssd plus 240GB- 70$
= 750$.
sell your old pc and make some money , then increase the money on
graphics card > motherboard > casing >cpu
Your CPU is 5 or 6 generations old now. While those first generation i7s are still good CPUs, they definitely show their age. You would have to sacrifice a lot of nice features to use it and you may not end up saving money. I would recommend that you sell the CPU and build from scratch.

My wife runs an i7 970 herself. While it does great for now Calculagator is correct it it is showing it's age. I have an i7 3930k in my 4K rig and it's on the verge of getting replaced. I am only awaiting the post Ryzen launch to see what CPU Arch. to go with and then my wife will inherit the i7 3930k to replace her aging i7 970. If you could get a motherboard, ram for under hundred bucks it may be worth building around it. In the end though it would be better to save up for a more modern i5/i7 CPU or Ryzen when it launches.
