I just got a job at a retail computers store. Its not really a geeky a place in fact its one of those large chains. We dont really aim computers at geeks because they know what they want and probably build their own systems. We aim at the novice computer user and try to make their lives simpler. Anyhoo I was wondering if you guys had any tips for making computer sales and closing a deal when it comes to selling computers to this group of people. Please dont flame me :/ I know how the advice we give isnt always in the users best interest but ill do my best to balance my ethics and whats good for my "career".

Listening to their needs and feeling them out for their personality and budget is the best route. Takes a people person with patience. Something I would fall short at, especially dealing with the budget minded market.
But you will find your niche sooner or later.
The main thing is these people know nothing, and have expetations of PC's as being the more than they are and easy to operate and maintain.

And the sign says "You got to have a membership card to get inside" Huh
So I got me a pen and paper And I made up my own little sign</pre><p></font color=red>

Like Rich said, look at their needs. If a person is going to be surfing the net and typing word documents, they dont need the latest and greatest stuff. Sometimes Celerons and Semprons arent just the junky processors like people say. They are a low quality very cheap processor and sometimes thats what people need.

My PC:
Abit AX8 Socket 939 VIA K8T890
AMD Athlon 64 3200 Winchester
Sapphire Radeon X700 Pro 256 Mb PCIe
WD Raptor 37 Gb SATA
Corsair 2x512 PC3200 DDR Dual-Channel Platnium Edition

Dont bother quoting them specific detail about the hardware unless they specify. Just give them the big picture.

Since you're in sales, you'll be in constant pressure to "UPSELL" the customer which could give ethical issues so think of it in this way, there is no such thing as overkill. Even the overkill will eventually become too archaic so in a sick way, upselling them is for their own good.

Most important rule!
Push them for the PC that has the higher commission rate!!!!

#1 Don't consider selling computers at a retail chain a 'career'. It can become one, but I really don't think you want it to.

#2 Not everyone is an idiot. Most of the people you are going to see are, but if you come in with that mind set, you are going to get burned by someone who is not.

#3 This is not good for sales but may earn you some respect where it counts (and save you a trip to the hospital). There are three words that you are some day going to have to use, no matter how hard it may seem. They are "I don't know." If you don't know something, please just say so and don't make stuff up. The next sales person I catch spewing BS is going to get a sock full of pennies to the back of the head. DON'T LET IT BE YOU!!!

You have an inalienable right to privacy.... until you get on my network.
