NEW MB old HD boot drive

Want to upgrade my pc with new MB and CPU. Have been out of "computer" stuff for six years. Can I use my old HD as the boot drive on my new MB?

With a fresh OS install you could. Just attempting to boot from it usually won't work.

I would purchase a new SSD drive for your OS and programs. You will see a world of speed difference and use that old drive for files after you format it.

Kinda thought that would be the case. Wasn't sure if someone had figured out how to do that without loosing all the (years)of files. Also didn't want to reload all the programs...yuck! Thks for the reply and have a great day!

You can clone that drive if want, that's an option.

Any time you switch motherboards you need to do a fresh OS install. You might get it to boot, but you will chase problems. It is just not worth the hassle.
