New Monitor for New Build

Hey guys. I will be building a new system in the coming weeks based around an intel i5-750 and an HD5850. But I also need to get a new monitor to go with it.

Here is what I am looking for:

Budget $180-250 (after discounts), I would like to stay around $220, but that is my range

Size 23"-24"

Resolution 1920x1080

Speakers- if the monitor doesn't come with it, I will go ahead and get a decent 2.1 system. But picture quality comes first.

Would prefer some sort of adjustment controls (tilt, swivel, height), but once again picture quality comes first!

This monitor is for gaming, movies/videos, schoolwork


I don't REALLY have a preferred brand, but I have been lookin at Asus, Dell, and Hp. I get discounts from Hp (varying amount), but there are also some really good coupons on Dell monitors right now. Asus tends to be cheaper anyways.

Picture quality is my number one priority as well as general quality of the monitor (hoping for no dead pixels). I appreciate any feedback you guys can give me. I really have no expertise in monitors. Thanks.

Damn. It took me a while to get all my links together.

I was looking at pretty much the same Asus monitor, but it was the 24 inch version. Same resolution and same response time. Like you said, reviews were overwhelmingly good.

However, if the Dell or Hp monitors are of better quality, I would prefer them. But I have no idea if they are...

I have the Asus VK246H which I purchased back in Dec 2008; I don't really use it much, probably down to maybe 6 hours per month. It is currently selling for $230 + $8 shipping; here's the link:

As my review states, the purpose for the monitor is only to check on processes that I am running on my HTPC. Since my HTPC is connected to my HDTV, I do all my video watching on my HDTV.

I already have two monitors connected to my primary PC. Rather than attempting to move one of my two expensive monitors back and forth, I simply decided to pickup something cheap and leave it connected to my HTPC.

The first 6 - 8 weeks was the most I've used the Asus since I wanted to write a review of it. It turns out to be a very good gaming monitor.
