New Monitor - incorrect info in graphics properties

I recently bought a different monitor to replace an old 17" CRT monitor. The new (used) monitor is a Viewsonic 19" LCD. Everything works fine. However, when I look at the info in the graphics properties it is showing that I have a CRT with 14" by 11" display area. I have searched and searched and can find nothing on how to change that info. Any suggestions? Like I said, everything seems to work okay but I wonder if it would be better if the system knew the correct monitor. By the way, I am using the on board graphics (Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family) in VGA mode.

Solution
try using the 916 driver http://www.viewsonic.com/us/support/downloads/search_driver/?prod_name=VA91. It may have multiple drivers in the same installation package.
What is the exact model of the Viewsonic? it should be on a label on the back of the monitor. You might need to go to ViewSonic's website and download the inf file for it. Generally, the driver for it only includes color profiles and the native refresh rate and such.

The monitor is model VA912b. I was not able to find any info or a driver for that model at the Viewsonic site. Probably because it is a fairly old model. For additional info, I looked at the Hardware -> Device manager and see that there are two plug and play monitors shown, but no additional info. If I were to remove those two items and reboot would the system install a driver based on new info, or would that be a really bad idea?

Just looked at the Viewsonic EU site and they have a driver for the monitor. I downloaded the standard signed driver. Will let you know if it helps.

Well, I installed the driver and the monitor now shows in the graphics info. However, it still says the monitor is 14" by 11" . ???????

I have more info. I looked at the EDID in the registry and it says Bad EDID with the binary data being all 00 00 00 00 00 00 ...
This could certainly account for the problem. What is interesting is that Linux detects the monitor correctly.
Really has me puzzled. I guess that as long as everything works okay I should just forget about it, but it would be nice to know why XP/graphics is not picking up the correct info.

Well, I finally have the correct EDID info in the registry. Had to look at Device Manager and view "hidden devices". It showed several older monitors that I no longer have (and did not remove). After removing them and re-booting the proper EDID info is loaded for the Viewsonic monitor. However, the Intel Graphics Media tool still shows the VA912b as a !4" monitor. Go figure !!!!!

Boy am I DUMB ! Of course it reports 14" by 11" because that calculates to an 18" screen (on the diagonal). And since the actual width and height are a bit more than 14 x 11, that is probably what the EDID values are (14, 11). Probably can not have a decimal value in the EDID binary info. Case Closed !
