new motherboard and cpu. computer not turning on

I've been working on this for like 24 hours and can't figure it out. i bought a new mobo (z97) and cpu (4690k) recently and installed them without problem, the system booted up fine and was ready to go.

i put my old motherboard and cpu in to backup my drive before the windows reinstallation. then a couple hours later I put my new parts back in, and the computer will not start. no fans no beeps or anything. I've gone through the checklist and everything is good.

1. I've triple checked and reinstalled all of the cables
2. reinstalled cpu and ram etc.
3. tested that psu works.

I've read through the motherboard manuals and nothing is out of place. the only thing i think changed, my computer did an update before i put the new parts in for the second time. if needed i can take some pics of my computer. i could really use some help on this one, thanks everyone!

Windows doesn't like to be messed around like that especially after an update. Assume your hard drive is dead (it's not but is in an incomplete transition between cpu architectures) and use another.

Correct! (Or SSD) Either way the computer needs some sort of working storage for it to start up and short of a format on your original drive (which will erase all that data you wanted) you are not going anywhere without serious professional help.

Chances are that you earn more than a terrabyte hard drive a day so buy one. Plug it in, start from scratch like you should do and then plug in and import all the stuff from your other hard drive.

. I 100% guarantee you will boot first time with a new hard drive

Thanks for the help! So one thing I don't understand is why the computer booted up with the old mobo, but not the new one, even after the update?
