I got myself a i7 mobo bundle and I'm wondering why windows won't boot? Everything's connected right. I thought that the hard drive wasn't being read correctly. I tried searching around and apparently I absolutely need to do a fresh install of windows? With a NEW key?

Solution
The only things you'll be able to copy are documents, and emails if you want them.

You'll have to reinstall programs. Copying programs wont work
I have similar problem's before you start with new mobo on old Win install first you need unistall all drivers.
Next try change Sata mode for HDD in bios for suport IDE.

If this not help try reinstal windows:
If you want reinstall, insert your CD/DVD with system and pres F8 and repair system this reinstal your system (if you want preserve your data do not use format) you nedd look at a COA key on the side, take a look at site windows for legal download of Windows 7, that you can use your key to activate. if it doesn't activate automatically, you will need to contact Microsoft on the freephone number and explain that you have replaced your motherboard due to a fault.

What's the best way to go about uninstalling all of my
Old drivers? I have the new motherboard and cpu in now, can I just put the old cpu and motherboard back in to make windows boot and uninstall all of the old drivers? If I can uninstall my old drivers and somehow make windows boot with my new cpu and motherboard without reinstalling windows that would be preferred as I reinstalled windows a month or so before getting these parts from a hard drive fail.

thanks for your help by the way. I just put my old mobo and cpu in and I'm windows as we speak. its important to mention my old cpu and board is an old phenom ii and an am3+ board, whereas my new mobo and cpu is an i7 and socket 1150 z97 board. I just put a windows 8 installation on my usb (which I did when I had to reinstall windows a few months ago) so i have that for safety in case I definitely need to reinstall windows, I could do it from there.

now, while I'm on windows right now, whats the next step so to speak?

and also a question about windows isntallations, how hard is it really to do a fresh install on a partition? I have a new 2tb drive that has more than enough space to install windows on a partition, I just don't know how complicated it would be or how "sloppy" my hard drive would look.

if I could easily make a new windows install on a partition, whilst keeping all of my old programs and files saved, that would be great.

the IDEAL thing for me would be just to uninstall all the old mobo drivers, throw in the new mobo and cpu, and boot to windows without any old drivers so I can find the new drivers myself.

Completely different platform for 95% it is missing SATA diver you need find on you mobo producer Web-page in Driver section something like this SATA Controller Driver V***** for Windows 7/8/8.1 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL) and when you swap for new mobo start installing win 7 but stop after you load Sata dirver * when you start see disk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBIqKs6gi2g&feature=player_detailpage#t=74

After this simple reboot and System for 99,99% will boot :)

Final advice better download more divers now, before you swap mobo is always change that first driver do not work.

unfortunately I don't quite understand your wording :/ when I had my new mobo and cpu installed I tried going into the bios and changing my windows drive to IDE and it still didn't boot. but right now I have my old mobo and cpu in so I can at least open windows for now but I'm still unsure what to do next. what drivers to I uninstall exactly? would I be screwed if I uninstall my old drivers and ever need to boot windows with the old hardware again?

Ok I recheck my spelling :)

At first uninstall ALL drivers.

At second find missing SATA drivers you find on motherboard producer Web-page in Driver section something like this SATA Controller Driver V***** for Windows 7/8/8.1 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL) * download it. and when you swap for new mobo start installation process for windows, but stop after you load Sata driver * when you start see disk.

You can see here where you selecting driver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBIqKs6gi2g&feature=player_detailpage#t=74

After this simple reboot and System for 99,99% will boot :)

Final advice better download more drivers now, before you swap mobo is always chance that first driver do not work, and you need select another.

If this method not work you need install new windows.

It'll be from a usb. Don't have a physical disc. I've done the usb method when my old drice failed so let's hope this time works. Thanks for the help

Yea I'll definitely
Do that. Unfortunately I'm in the position where I can't do a wipe and fresh I stall. Way too much important things to save. If I were just to boot from it and install fresh windows on a new partition would I be able to carry over or transfer things from the old windows to the new partition? And then delete the remainder of the old portion? I just don't know how sloppy my hard drive would look with two partitions
