Hello everyone, I bought a Synology 423+, installed the drive inside, but on first power up I smelled a strong plastic and burnt smell.
The smell passed after few minutes and everything seems to work fine and in temperatures. I would like to know if this is normal.
The smell did not return again.

Agree with @hotaru.hino

However, I will add the suggestion to (at least at first) power down the NAS every couple of days, open the case, and use a bright flashlight to look around.

Simply to keep a closer eye on things. If nothing appears amiss and the smell does not return then all should be well.

No need to continue the inspections beyond what would be normal/routine for your network and circumstances.

Hi, thanks for your reply. The CPU and HD temperatures are in the normal range. I removed the hard drive bays and took a look, as far as I can see everything looks fine, but a lot of the electronics are behind the plastic. When I stick the nose in, I can still vaguely smell the smell I said. Have you had a Synology NAS before? Has it ever done this to you?

I have a two-bay unit, but I haven't smelled any burning plastic. Maybe that "new computer" smell when I unpacked it.

Thank you for the answer.
Did you smell it when you opened the box or when you turned the unit on?
