I see this is very late, but the new Sandforce SSDs does NOT handle 285MB/s sustaned read and 270 write, those speeds require compressible data and are peak numbers. For uncompressible data, the read speed is aound 200-210MB/s, and write speed is around 130MB/s, so those would be the sustained numbers.
It's also sort of selfcontradicting to say "sustained up to", sustained is the lower limit it can hit.

And as others said, SATA is a 10-bit stream with 8 bits of data and 2 bits of ECC. 3Gbos = 3000Mbps/10bits = 300MB/s, and after that you have to factor in controller and HBA overhead, (285/300) wich is 5% in the case of SandForce as meassured.
