Hello all, it's been a while but that fun and expensive time has come... Upgrading the gaming PC!

Current PC is:
Intel i5 4690 @ 3.5ghz
Gigabyte Z97X-SLI
ASUS GeForce GTX 970 OC
G.Skill 8gb DDR3 2133
Soundblaster X-Fi
WD Black 256GB Performance SSD - 8 Gb/s M.2
Crucial MX100 2.5" 256GB SATA III
CoolerMaster 1000W PSU
NZXT H440 case

So here's the plan...
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. Gaming and some light non-3D Autocad
2.
What YOUR budget is. +/- 2500$ CAD
3. What country : Canada
4. I look at prices on Newegg.ca, Pcpartpicker.com, amazon.ca and poke shopbot.ca as well.
5. IF YOU have a brand preference. Don't care... at first glance, was looking at AMD for CPU and NVIDIA for GPU
6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts? Keeping the case + PSU. Will keep the the SSD and M2 for now... but if a good deal on a 500gb/1tb M.2 is avail, I could upgrade that as well.
7. No overclocking
8. What resolution? Current monitor is 1080p, but will eventually go 4k ( waiting for decent deal on a monitor)
9. WHEN do you plan to build it? Hopefully, max in a week or 2.

What I had in mind so far: CPU + MOBO + RAM + GPU
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS
G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 C16
MSI GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 8 GB GAMING X TRIO or MSI RTX 2080 Super SEA Hawk X or... ?

Some questions:
1- regarding the GPU... 2080 super or bite the bullet and go 2080 TI? So many models that I'm kind of lost in there.

Saw this deal resterday PALIT GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GAMINGPRO OC that makes me wonder if worth it!? ( CAD 1599$) but cheapest is scary...

EDIT: or this EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti BLACK EDITION XC GAMING for CAD 1599$

2- Will upgrading the HD to a newer model make that big of a difference?
3- I think the PSU will be enough?
4- With no OC planned, is the stock heatsink/fan enough?

Feel free to comment, I might have overlooked something!
Merci d'avance.

Solution
Makes perfect sense! Figured a 2018 M.2 would not be optimal. I wasn't sure the upgrade would make that much of a difference but it seems like it!

Thanks, that's a good start. So many models makes it hard to weed out the bad choices.

It is a good chunk of change to add to the bill... Maybe upgrade when the next gen shows up later this year (hopefully). I shouldn't have looked at all those benchmarks where the TI dominates... for a price!

Exact model is the Cooler Master Silent Pro M 1000W 80+bronze purchased in JAN 2011.... damn! Didn't expect that ahahahah. I'll look into that. What could happen if I use it? As far as I know, it's in good conditions. Never had any issues.

Thank you for your input!!!!
A 9-year-old...

This board is in stock at least and pretty good. Also with this budget i would most definitely upgrade SSD.

I would go with the gaming x trio since i see no need for a water cooled card. My friend has that model of 2080 super and seems to like it. Reviews are all positive. The 2080ti isnt worth the huge premium over the 2080 super.

Whats the model of this CM PSU? If its 5+ yrs old you may want to upgrade it anyhow for your new hardware.

A 9-year-old PSU with a Ryzen 9 and 2080 super seems like a bad idea.

Many things could happen.
  • You could use it and it works fine for as long as you own it. Good, you saved some money.

  • You could use it and it fails, but nothing else is damaged. Then you have to buy a new PSU and are out the same amount of money as just replacing it when you upgraded. However now you were inconvenienced.

  • You use it and it fails and damages other hardware. Then you have to buy a new PSU plus any device damaged such as your very expensive GPU. Now you are out far more than if you just replaced it, to begin with.
My opinion. Replace it.

100% right. Thanks.

Will keep an eye out for this one... but it goes from avail to sold out real fast!

Plan B: MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS or Gigabyte X570 GAMING X but no wi-fi...

The wifi version of those is at least 50$ more expensive than the ASUS... to wifi or not wifi ahaha

quick question pops to mind and I cant seem to find a definite answer.

2080 Ti and Ryzen 3800 or Ryzen 3900 and 2080 super? With games being more GPU dependent, does that make sense?
