So right now looking for a mobile solution first above all, although if a much better desktop solution is the case, I guess I'd go with that so anyway.... I am coming from an RTX 3080 ti laptop and looking for a current gen or good deal on a powerful PC upgrade, basically I want to play at 1440p/2K on high/max settings with little to no issues. I am thinking the choices are between a 5080/90 desktop, laptop or a 4090 laptop/desktop at this point? Should I wait for the 50 series laptops for another month or save money and get an RTX 4090 laptop now at a much better price and from what I'm hearing maybe lose about 15% in performance, especially with the 5080 only being like 10% more powerful, if that, than last generations 4080/super. What do you all think? I am torn between getting a 5080 desktop at a pretty decent price or really just upgrading my laptop from 3080 ti to a 4090 and I can get it at a pretty good price now. Thanks in advance!

What country are you located, what is your budget and how much for that 4090?

US, living in Michigan at the moment let's say I can spend up to 5K if I WANTED to, but I'd rather not...lol...like I said I don't necessarily want to game or think about 4K resolution also at the moment keep that in mind, I'm going to get a new 2K monitor but I want to not have to really worry about fps/etc. Thanks.

Your choice of power supply depends on your graphics card. Just make sure to get a ATX 3.1 psu if you go with an Nvidia card. Both the new Nvidia 50XX series and AMD 97XX series cards support PCIe 5.0 as does this board down below.

I should've prefaced with I'm buying a pre-built most likely off Amazon, Bestbuy, Newegg, etc. I use it for work and gaming also so it's not just a "gaming" PC. I'd rather get a laptop then a desktop. I've been looking into stuff and I'm really close on just pulling the trigger and getting an Alienware m18 R2 rtx 4090 with 4TB SSD, 64GB ram for $3399, which looks like it'll play pretty much everything over 100fps at 2k/1440p on high settings, any opinions? I also contemplated getting a 5080 desktop and saving some money, and also there's getting a 4090 desktop which I'm actually more comfortable buying then a 5090 at this point, plus it even beats 5080 in most gaming benchmarks and you get the additional vram, so yeah...

You want to make sure that your choice of prebuilt includes a decent psu, board and RAM. The reason I say that is because a lot of prebuilt manufactures cut cost by going with either or all cheap psu's, boards, and RAM. Another option is Microcenter (two of them in Michigan) and they will build your PC for you after you choose the components. They have some pretty decent bundle deals atm.

Yeah, I love Microcenter, have one right in Westbury near my parents in NY, I used to go there all the time and buy parts, I've also seen that with some 5080 desktops with like a 850w PSU, yeah that's kind of cutting it close I like 1000w a lot more. If there's any good deals or any opinion on which to get, like I said priority is a laptop, but I'm not sure and if it even makes sense to get a 5090 and spend over 5gs to get one when I can get a damn nice 4090 for like 2 grand less and I can get some extras with it also with saving some money, also the 1440p/2k will be great with 4090m it looks like.

A poster on another board found a decent prebuilt w/5070 Ti and 9800x3D for $2300 on Newegg. The psu sucked but that's a easy $110 fix for a decent 850W ATX 3.1 psu. The 5070 Ti runs about even with the 4080 (non Super) which is pretty decent for 2K gaming.

not trying to find things to fix or a fixer upper right now, I just want a decent pre-built without having to mess around honestly, which is why a laptop is also easier for me, like I said work/mobility, not hobbyist building stuff. I'm thinking best choices for me either 1) save and also have mobility and get 4090 laptop 2) wait and spend more get mobility and get 5090 laptop 3) get 4090 desktop (sacrifice mobility) 4) also sacrifice mobility with 5080 desktop or spend more and get 5090 desktop
