Just put together my new PC. Hooked up the GPU to my monitor via a HDMI/HDMI cable. But my monitor just says "HDMI power saving mode" or something and it doesn't show anything but a black screen?
My PC is on and everything seems to be working fine. I only have the cable going from the GPU to my monitor, do I need another cable or something?

Monitor is a LG Flatron E2350V-SN
GPU is a Sapphire R9 280x Vapor-X Tri-X
Processor is the FX-8320
PSU is a Senty 850w Modular

If I don't plug in the HDMI cable, my monitor says "Check signal cable" and once I put in the HDMI, it goes to power saving mode and doesn't do anything else

Sorry I forgot to reply guys! I figured out the problem, to my embarrassment.. :)

I forgot to hook up my second power plug to the top half of my motherboard, so it wasn't getting enough power and that was causing no video haha. I plugged it in and I am writing this response on my new PC!

Thanks for the help though! :)
If your motherboard has fancy diagnostic LEDs on it, check for boot error codes. If it does not, get a "PC speaker" and plug that on the appropriate motherboard headers to see if you get 'beep codes' which might tell you what the problem is.

Right now, it seems like POST fails before it gets far enough along to initialize the GPU, which might indicate a CPU, RAM or motherboard issue.

I remember i had this issue with my build. happened randomly where i couldnt get an output on my screen even though everything seemed to be working fine.

Sadly i cant give you an exact why of fixing it as i dont know what caused it etc.

This is what i did:

New cable, re-seat the GPU, removed battery on mobo to reset it.

checked everything on computer was connected properly and no cables where loose.

happened a few more times then booted up fine lol.

would happen once in a blue moon with no video output and would then come back.

I assumed the GPU was either faulty or pci-e slot was a bit iffy.

long winded test but have you tried a different monitor and another type of output such as dvi? when the computer is on does the fan on the card spin up?

Most monitor / tvs do auto detect but some may not.
