I bought a Dell gaming laptop from Jbhifi for around $1600 on special last year. I bought it down here in Australia where I live and after 8months it started lagging and I had a dell technician over a few times to fix it, but he couldn't. Therefore I have recently been accepted to get a refund of all the money or get a replacement. I have recently been reading about pc builds and what not and found out it's a lot cheaper to buy the parts instead of buying the full pc, and take it to a shop to put it together. I was wondering if anyone could help me to find a good gaming/personal desktop for around $1700. I already have keyboard, mouse, monitor, and mousepad. I would prefer a desktop pc as they're better for gaming instead of an HDMI input I use for my laptop. Thank you to anyone that helps, I appreciate it. - Ted

Hmm, the only demanding AAA game that I see there in the list is gta v. All the other games will run buttery smooth in excess of 150fps.

A laptop can have many limitations : the cpu is low powered and will be running hot in such a cramped space.

The heating solution is shared by the cpu and gpu in the laptop and will get thermally throttled in many cases.

The 8400/1070 will give 150fps in other games and 60-80fps in gta v @ 1080p. Have no worries.

thank you, I will wait for a few more recommendations and decide what pc I should get. Could you maybe recommend a pre-built pc as well that comes together, thanks for your help

Both are good for 1080p 60fps. I would choose the 8400 and 1070 combo.

But bear in mind that both of them have a b360 mobo. And probably the stock Intel heat sink.

If you can find a good system with z370 mobo, u can upgrade your cpu to a 9700k for 144hz gaming. The 1070 would do for 1080p 144hz.

What do you mean by 144hz gaming compared to 1080p 144hz? thanks

I am talking about monitors - 1980x1080 60hz or 144hz screens.

The max fps if not bottlenecked by the gpu for a cpu is what I am talking about.

The 8400/8500 are good upto say 100fps. But in a 144hz screen, that would cause noticeable stuttering in some cases.

Whereas the upcoming 9600/9700k chips can oc upto 5.2-5.3ghz compared to the 4.3ghz(iirc) of 8400. That's almost 1ghz higher with the same or a bit better IPC. That would push the max achievable fps for a game engine to about 140-150fps (projected, 9xxx series will release in a month and you can the reviews and benchmarks yourself)

The same goes for a gpu. For 1080p, a 1070/1070ti is recommended for 144hz monitor since it can generate that many frames at a given resolution.

Check for cpu/gpu benchmarks for the games you play in YouTube.

thank you, but i currently run 300fps on csgo with low video settings, but other games i use high settings and i get 140fps.

It has fps lag spikes every second down to 20fps, which is like me freezing and the technician has come over twice and tried to fix it. My cpu randomly spikes from 74% to like 30% and other times down to like 10%. I also intend to play a lot of csgo!!! some league of legends, age of empires and a few other games such as gtav and rocketleague. And my current dell laptop has a gtx1050ti and a i7-7700Hq cpu 2.80 ghz. Im not sure if this is very important to say aswell, but when i open geforece experience up somestimes it has this white box that just sits in the corner of my screen until i X out of it.
