So here is my dilemma.
I have an old rig (evga nForce 680i mobo, 8 gb corsair xms2, q9550, HD6970, windows 8.1) and looking to update. Primarily to play GTA V and a couple other steam games i have. I also download alot of movies cause i have an amazing internet connection and convert them to mp4 (if needed)
Now...
I currently have an asus p6x58d-e, i7-950, 6gb ripjaws ddr3-1600 combo i acquired because i saw for a good deal (guy i bought it from didnt know what was wrong so i picked it up and it worked fine)
What I am curious to know is if it would be a good idea to get a Xeon w3690 off ebay for $190 and slap it in that mobo and call it a day. $190 is not bad for what the specs are but i dont want to just look at specs i want real world experiences any of you may have. I will for sure be getting an evga gtx980 ftw acx 2.0 as well for the system very soon cause my hd6970 is just too slow. even with OC and liquid cooling. Maybe even two 980s?

OR, should i just hold out and buy something else. was really looking at an x99 platform but they really are pricey.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Plan for a new build. Or get an aftermarket CPU cooler if you don't have one already and OC the i7-950. The Xeon won't give you a boost.

One GTX 980 is plenty awesome, use the money to get a better platform like Z97 and 4690K if X99 is too much. Sounds like you're gaming so X99 is not necessary.

Ok. Im moving all this to a thermaltake core x9 (i know its big) so i have expansion in the future. i will also be getting the Corsair H110i GT for the cpu.
Also i see you are an official rep for g.skill and i am running the F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ. Do you think i will need more?

Ok cool sky lake sounds promising. Looks like I'm sticking it with the 950. I wonder what kinda oc I'll be able to get with that 110 cooling it off. And maybe I'll stick too one gtx980. My idea was to have to so they won't work as hard. I will be gaming at 1080 but want to get a new monitor since I can get a 4k from micro center for a good price
