Dear Empire Players!
For over two months I am working on new, Qt based, graphical empire client.
You can findout more at its homepage:
http://diablo.ict.pwr.wroc.pl/~maciek/qtei/
I am a programmer and new Empire player. Being computer strategic games
addict from early childhood, i fell in love in empire instantly. The
complexity and athmosfere of long-term game in international community
makes the game great.
I've discovered Empire few months ago, and since then I realized that the
game lack of good, graphical, covienient and extensible client. There is
the ptkei - my favorite - which is really impresive, and - at the other
hand - there is WinAce wich present slightly different approach. In my
humble opinion, both clients don't have impressive graphics and modern user
interface. Don't get me wrong - i don't mind using comamnd line. As a
programmer and long time unix user, i can understand people who love
clients like pei and could not stand without writing scripts. But my
friends, grown up on modern games, they are looking at me suspiciously,
when they see me typing some commands and staring at a hexagonal grid. Even
people who are still playing games like Master Of Orion can not understand
empire.
I pass through the r.g.e archives from past few years, and read a lot about
how graphical client should work and look, in wich language it should be
written, what features should be implemented etc etc. I tried to use these
informetion the best i could.
Today i'd like to show you how the client will look, and ask you about
opinions and suggerstions. The project is codenamed 'qtei', honouring the
tradition, and it is in 'technical preview, early pre-alpha' stage. Almost
nothing is completed, and there are zillion of bugs. All the thins are
going to be fixed during future development.
The core is working with all the goodies: console, graphic map with bitmaped
tiles, python extension, clinet-side command etc (event extending gui with
PyQt scripts, which is _definitely_cool_).
All the features are only 'drafted'. There is a lot work to do, and i'd like
to know if my work makes any sense.
Please tell me if you like the idea and what features would you like to see.
Sources and binary executable for i386 linux can be donwloaded from project
homepage:
http://diablo.ict.pwr.wroc.pl/~maciek/qtei/
You will need qt and python to compile and/or run qtei. Currently there is
only linux version, but you can try to compile it on other systems, both
unix- and non-unix-like.
The client makes extensive use of new command 'xdump' to synchronize its
database with server, so it will work only with newes server with
GUINEA_PIGS option turned on.
Blitzes hosted at Wolfpack will do very well.
I'd really love to hear your opinion, 'couse future of qtei depends of its
acceptance. All contributes - code, artwork or ideas - would be welcome.
