Hi
I was thinking that it was time for me to upgrade from my quad core machine to the new Ivy Bridge, I don't want any heavy duty machines or something too expensive, but Id also like it to be fast, so I was thinking of the following:

MotherBoard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157311

R.A.M: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220735

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811345016

Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027

SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147193

Thermal Paste: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100302

Cooling: (1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835132024

Media Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151256

OS: Ubuntu 12.10

I will be using this machine to surf the web and maybe play a few games like minecraft or counter strike...
But is the power supply suffiecient?

Thanks :)

Micro center is a great place to source parts from as they usually have system builder specials and CPU/Motherboard combos that will save you a good amount of money. The latest generation of intel chips code named "Ivy bridge" (as is the 3570K you sourced) are great chips but in all reality offer a maximum of 10% performance over the previous generation code named "sandy bridge" (as is the 2500K Ja3farQ cited) The "K" notation at the end of these chips is to state that they have an "unlocked" multiplier, due to this they command a higher price point and are only practical in systems that will be overclocked. Seeing as you are just looking for a modern upgrade from your Q6600 and don't seem to have any desire to overclock the system I...

Any reason why you are moving backwards from a quad to a dual core ? More and more applications are being coded to utilize 4 cores every day as 4 core machines are now common place and majority in the computer world.

I still run at 6600 @ 3.0 Ghz in one of my machines and it works just fine. Yes the i3 is going to be a bit faster in lightly threaded applications but when it comes down to running multi threaded workloads and programs the Q6600 will still be faster, especially with a good clock on it. If you are going to build a new machine I would advise going with an i5 quad just so you arn't moving backwards.

Juat saying, I bought an i7 3770K from MicroCenter a week ago for $230.

Also, the i5 2500K was $160, and the i5 3570K was $180... If you want a good deal, now is the time to pounce... Assuming that this deal is still active and they still have them in stock. It *should* be active until December 1st though.

Paired with this discrete graphics card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131481
To further future proof your system and ensure that you will be able to enjoy any gaming title that interests you in the for seeable future. Both of these together total 239.88 only $9.99 more expensive than the 3570K by it's self and will work to create a much more well rounded system. Hope this helps if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
