New setup not booting (Sabertooth 990FX, AMD FX8120)

Hello,

So im not exactly new to building computers but i do have room for improvement especially when it involves motherboards lol. so i just purchased a new CPU, MOBO, RAM and a new aftermarket CPU cooler, and i hooked everything up and the computer starts up and POSTs and i am able to get into the UEFI BIOS and im able to boot from my new copy of windows seven to start installing the O/S onto the new system and that is where i have my issue.

every time i try to format a drive ( i have three different HDD's all SATA) or even just keep it unformatted and just install the O/S the system just shuts off... no reason at all that i have seen but as soon as i hit the OK button to format the drive BAM! shuts off.

at first i though it was the PSU so i unhooked two of the drives and only used one stick of RAM in the slot farthest away from the CPU so all i had installed was the CPU w Cooler, one SATA dvd drive one vid card and one hdd and i knew that my 850W PSU should have been able to handle that but... did the exact same thing.

im able to stay in the BIOS for as long as i want and im able to be in the installation of windows screen for as long as i want until i reach the point of either installing the actual O/S or im about to format a HDD to install the O/S. so i really dont think its the PSU.

next i thought it was the HDD but i tried installing the O/S on THREE different drives, i mean what are the chances that they were all bad? but i checked any way and ran S.M.A.R.T tests on all three through the BIOS and they all check good.

so now here i am trying to figure this crap out and im out of options... is it the MOBO? or the new CPU? right when it shuts off the CPU_LED light flashes for a split second and then it shuts completely off, and when i press the power button to turn it back on nothing happens until i actually flip the switch on the back of the PSU to off then on again and the whole process starts over.

also during POST the BOOT_DEVICE_LED stays on until i choose the disc drive to be booted from then it goes off and then proceed to boot from the windows disc until i reach the installation part of it.

HELP ME!!!! PLEASE!!!!

here is my setup:

ASUS Sabertooth 990FX
AMD FX 8120
16 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 PC1600
160 GB SATA II HDD
250 GB SATA II HDD
500 GB SATA II HDD
cooler mastercpu cooler ( N212 i believe)
Writemaster 22X DVD RW sata drive
850W Black Widow PSU
ATI Radeon HD 5750

any ideas would be very helpful thanks!

the PSU is a rocketfish but the model is a black widow, ive had it for about four years but its still an 850w and i plugged it into another system and it runs perfect.

i plugged the HDD into the SATA 3g ports and im still getting the same shut down issue.

make sure the mb bios has the newest code on it..it may post but not have all the code it needs for the the new cpu.
Hiren's BootCD 15.1
see if the drive you want will fdisk and format from another tool cd. there also a min xp boot on the cd. if the same issue happens then you have a power issue.

yes the 990 FX does support the FX chip right out of box, when they first came out they did not but now they come stock with the v.0901 flash

im going to get the PSU upgraded pretty soon but not for another month or so but i do want to see if this issue can be resolved without a PSU swap for the time being atleast

and "Smorzio" im not familiar with the MIN XP BOOT on the disc that you are talking about what is that?

an old rocketfish was made by huntkey and are great.

the new ones are made by CWT and sold through best buy.

flashed the BIOS went through fine no issues with the POST or the UEFI and tried to reload the O/S and still shut down pre-format... any other suggestions? i really do appreciate the help thanks again

you find it handy to use a usb with linux on it. if you are able to run it an access the hard drive with it, i suspect the problem is a windows installation one and not hard ware.

assuming you are using a laptop or other desktop a painless way to create a boot usb stick is to got use linux live:
http://www.linuxliveusb.com/

it may be helpful. if your rig shuts down when using the live stick then it definitely is a hardware problem.

i will try downloading and installing the linux software as soon as i am at my rig, but right now i am away from it but if it does install and i am able to boot off of the FD is there any recomendations of what to do if it is a Software issue with the install disk? because i do like linux but my wife does not and its kind of a joint computer so i have to have windows on it

Your only gonna have Linux on it temporarily. its kinda lika a cut around the windows install issue

ok so if it does install how then am i able to put windows on it, im gonna need to have a clean install so im guessing i should download the ISO and put it on a FD and try it that way... i have a legitimate license key so i shouldnt have an issue with that but im really leaning toward a hardware issue here... could this issue be caused by my MOBO being faulty? because i think that its the south bridge that is an issue because during POST the BOOT_DEVICE_LED light stays on, meaning that there are issues with one or more of the hdd's, and the light stays on until i go into boot manager and physically choose to boot from the disc drive and then it goes off, ive checked all three hdd's and they all work on another PC, but as soon as i choose to use one of the HDD's during the O/S install the CPU_LED light flashes real fast and the whole thing shuts off...

idk... i will try to install linux and see if it will work but i really am leaning towards a possible DOA MOBO

ok so now i have an update to this issue.

i was actually able to install the operating system onto the hdd but iwas only able to when i went into the bios and changed the processor setting to power saver and when i loaded into the O/S disk i pressed F8 and loaded the O/S into safe mode and was able to install it onto the hdd

so im a little confused on why it worked that way but i said ok now i have something to work with, so i went and installed all the drivers for the O/S and everything went smoothly and then i restarted the system and now it gets to the loading windows screen before it just shuts down like it did before. the CPU setting is still on power saver but it still shuts off completely after POST and as it goes into the O/S

so i still think its a hdw issue but i have my doubts now, it shut off completely right after i installed the drivers for the vid card the LAN the USB 3.0 controller. any suggestions with this latest update to my issue

any input would be greatly appreciated

check that the video card is the top pci slot near the cpu. check that is seated. if it is try the video card in the other pci video slot..could be a bad video slot on the mb. the red light on the mb for boot device...another user had a bad cd-rom that did the same thing..one other thing to check make sure your using the intel sata ports and not the third party ones..there only made for data drives. have you tried with one stick of ram..the video card and the mb on a box outside the case to se if it will install windows ok on one hard drive?? do you have another video card to see if the gpu is causing the issues.

yes the vid card is in the top pci-E slotand yes it was fully seated so i tried it in another slot, i also took out the mobo and set everything up on a box and left the CD drive unhooked, i left one stick of RAM in as well as reseated the CPU and resat the CPU cooler on it and tried to power it up and unfortunately now nothing happens except for the CPU_LED light is a constant red so i double checked the CPU was sat correctly and it was and the thermal paste did not leak onto the MOBO or the socket so im kind of worried that maybe a short happenned while i was reseating the CPU so what do you guys think?

ok so i feel kind of dumb lol the whole issue with the CPU light staying on was because i had the CPU Heatsink fan plugged into the CPU_OPT connector instead of the CPU_FAN connector so it didnt send a signal saying there was a heat sink installed lol but now here i am with it completely installed and ive noticed that it completely boots into the O/S and at different times the whole computer just shuts off completely without warning and i know its not overheating because as soon as it shuts off i turn it back on and go into the BIOS and check the temps and granted the time between boots will have given it time to cool down but if it was at the point where it would shut off due to overheating it should not have cooled down all the way to 28C in a matter of seconds. so im leaning towards the PSU being bad but from the symptoms that ive described what are your thoughts on it?
