[SOLVED] New System Build

Hello Forum!

I have been away for a while (probably 5-6 years) and need some help on the latest tech.

Please help me improve the build below.

Our 7 year old family PC broke down and we are in need of a new one . It is mainly going to be used for productivity, school work, and Minecraft and probably some more intensive gaming down the road. Single 1080P monitor. Does not need to be a power house. Am going to skip the graphics card for now (due to obvious market reasons) and use my old R7 370.

With the recent Intel Issued price cuts on 10th gen I was considering the Intel Core I5-10400. Although I haven't been a fan in the past... I was considering getting the components from Best Buy. However I am open to other reputable e-tailers. However I want to avoid 3rd party sellers. Would ideally like to spend around $800 give or take a $100. Would prefer to gravitate towards $700 or even $600 if possible. INTERESTED in BUYING THIS WEEK!

CPU: Intel Core I5 10400 $159.99

RAM: CORSAIR - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2PK x 8GB) 3.2 GHz DDR4 DRAM Desktop Memory Kit - Black $84.99
(yes, I realize the ram frequency is overkill for a Core I5 10400 and probably can't be taken advantage of but the price is decent)

Final Thoughts:

I have seen some big youtubers recommend sites that sell CD Keys for WIN 10 for as little as $20. Do such companies have any validity? Seems very suspicious to me.

Also if you see any compatibility issues or would recommend an upgrade or downgrade in any one area please let me know.

Those are grey market windows keys and they work.

I'd wait for Intel to release Rocket Lake next month ... similar pricing, native support of 3200MHz RAM, improved IPC and PCIe 4. I'd also go with a cheaper motherboard such as a B560 board. The new version of that chip you're looking at is called i5 11400

Not as fast as the Samsung but fast enough that you would never notice the difference. Most likely that extra space is going to play a factor later on.

Not bad!

What are you thoughts on the Intel i-5 10400 after the price cut? Do you think something like a ryzen 3 (4core+4 thread) or a core i3 would be a better value?
For gaming you can't do much better than the cpu you chose .. other than the new one being released next month should be that much better due to the improvements I listed in my first post.

Going less than 6 core with your mentioned workload is bad value.

This should be good...

If you decide to wait for next gen., just replace the CPU and MOBO in the list.

You really dont need a Z490 mobo for that CPU.
A good B560 Steel Legend goes for under 130 that offers memory overclock vs the B460.

You dont need, but its good to have for 15-20 bucks more for specially the memory overclocking and more bus lanes besides other features, which can be beneficial for productivity and peripherals. Also gives you better upgrade option if you go with a K chip later. I wont go with it if the price gap is significant.
