new system - e6850/ultra120 extr/antec nine hundred - 47C load at stck

So i grappled with whether or not to setup my new system with water or go with great air cooling. I chose the latter after a lot of internal debate.

I put it all together last night, and lapped both my ultra 120 extreme and e6850 ... here's the setup:

ocz 700 watt gamestream powersupply
antec nine hundred case

I'm still warming the system up so i'm running 9x333. let me explain the cooling setup - i've got two 120 mm in the front of the case running full speed (rated 70 cfm each). I have a 120mm running six inches behind by top 120mm intake creating an 'air duct' right to the video card running full speed (rated 90cfm). the ultra120 extreme has a 120mm fan pushing air through the fins (70 cfm rated), there is an exhaust 120mm fan 2 inches from the back of the ultra120 extreme mounted to the case (110 cfm). the top of the case has a 200mm as an exhaut (rated 140cfm). the power supply is mounted on the bottom of the case with fan sucking air down and out.

The air flow is INCREDIBLE ... between the ultra120 extreme and the exhaust fan on the case i actually feel pressure that is hard to resist when i put my hand between the two.

thermal compound is arctic silver 5 ceramique.

So here's my issue. I'm using coretemp to measure. load with prime running maximum heat stress it's at 44C on one core and 47C on the other. This is at stock 9x333 and vdroop from 1.3 down to 1.264v when stressing. My idle temperatures hover between 28C on one core and 26C on the other core. I'm quite concerned.

Some reviews of ultra 120 extremes say that people have load temps in the mid 30s! did I do something wrong? perhaps I lapped unevenly? maybe those other people are measuring temp with speedfan instead of coretemp? maybe my system still needs to settle in? i have all these fans running on high and it's really loud - i knew this was going to be the case - but i thought i'd have cooler temps than these.

Hrm I thought TAT gave incorrect temps for c2d and was developed for pentium M single core chips.

with TAT my temps are on load 34 and 32 C while core temp says 49C and 47C (the day got hotter) ambient temp is now 23C.

which to believe?

Update:

I'm set to 3.8ghz (422x9) and 1.475 vcore in bios and speedfan/cpuz are showing drop to 1.41-1.42 while stressing

temps in core temp are now 33 idle and 56-58 stress

That is NOT for C2D chips. Bobkat is right. Use coretemp or speedfan (speed fan requires you to add 15*C to the temp b/c its not configured right, I.E. 30*C in speedfan = 45*C in the real world).

Bobkat, thats a good OC. What did you do to fix your temps? The heatsink wasn't properly seated?

I didn't do anything actually my temps were as follows:

stock: idle 26-28 and stress 44-46
3.8ghz: idle 35-38 and stress 56-59

ambient temperature today is 25C

do these seem right for the setup i've described above?

Yikes didnt know that, just tested mine with coretemp at idle on 3.4 they are at 25-29 and at load 54-55. Im using a 120 ultra as my heatsink

yea similar for me - between 3.0 and 3.6 i idle around 26-28 and load 44-46 ... no difference really but i can undervolt and get 3.6 ... to get 3.7 however undervolting does not work i have to run 1.375v

bobkat,i think you have a good OC, mine at 3.7ghz using core temp 95.04 idle 34-36C, load(orthos/prime) 46-50C, bt the difference between us is with the voltage, i have to pushed it to 1.55 enable to get a stable system.

WOW 46-50C on load with PRIME!?!?!

what kind of cooling?

at 3.8ghz my ultra 120 extreme lapped, chip lapped, antec nine hundred, 200 mm fan, 5x 120 mm fans keep my chip at 57-61 with dual instance prime running.

maybe i need to re-seat my ultra 120 extreme?

perhaps you should try reseating it,i used to have temp such as yours and didnt feel contented due to the writeups i red re ultra 120 extreme cooling ability.i put an extra thermal compound as packed with 120 xtreme,making sure it wouldnt profusely leaked out of the cpu top.my tt 120 extreme is also lapped to 600 grit but not the processor.nways, i think your temp is good enough considering you're 1 ghz OCing,i think.but should you want to lower it more try reseating and check surfaces of both.

so what exactly is involved in 'reseating' the ultra 120 ex? Do i have to completel remove the HSF assembly or do i just loosen the screws and shift the HSF around a bit and then tighten the screws back down?

also,remember your temps are always gona be relative to your enviroment temps.ie in summer it average around 10degrees hotter,i loosen my overclock a bit..

So i reseated my HSF and the results are not that different:

e6850 at 3.8ghz 1.475v set in bios 1.41v on load as per speedfan/cpuz

when ambient is 22C : idle is 33C : load is 57C

when ambient is 29C : idle is 39C : load is 64C

does this seem like the right temps for an antec nine hundred with all case fans running on high, the optional duct fan installed, a 110CFM silverstone fan at exhaust, e6850 lapped, ultra 120 extreme lapped? seems really high to me. any ideas?

Here is my stuff and I have a question about TAT, core temp and speed fan

My temps seem to be roughly the same....

My specs
E6300 OC'd to 7x458 (3200) with a vcore of 1.2875 Lapped
Ultra 120 Extreme Lapped with a Scyth s flex

Chief tech case with 120mm fan in front, 80mm fan at side running at half speed for quiteness, 2 120mm fans for outtake, one in back one as a blow hole.


I am right now running Dual Prime 95's. Ambient temp is at least 76 degree in house, no more than 78 degrees ( have thermostat set at 76, but i am in a room that has 3 walls that is all windows...

Core temp says core 1=48c-50c
core 2=48c-50c

Tat says core 1=44c to 46c
core 2=44 to 46c

Speed fan pretty much agrees with core temp

Tat, core temp and speed fan all agree on idle, of 38-40c

Edit: My question, core temp when I set it to show tjunction, it shows 48c on idle and but when I start Dual Prime95's, it drops to 37-38c??????

I think my high temps were a function of ambient temperature, since the weather has cooled down now I have about 3 or 4 degrees cooler temps. I decided to go to 1.6v and 4.0ghz here's a screenshot. she lasts for about 10 mins in prime95 but i can game for hours.
