Question New Threadripper advice needed (New Build) Raid 0 and board

I am looking at a new build and am thinking about the following:
i would like to run 2 evo pros m.2 for boot but dont think this board supports 4 lanes on each also any better suggestions for parts. thanks:

Hey Aaron,

It's odd you are choosing for a threadripper build, unless you are doing some heavily cpu tasks like professional machine learning and rendering big chunks of data.

A more consumer friendly approach is something like a ryzen 2700 or i7 9700k .
Also for the raid 0 I would take a NAS.

The only thing I find odd about your build is the low quality ram, ecc buffed and 3200+ mhz would be my preference.
 
Why not os will boot before you can even turn the screen on.

You are doubling your chance of drive failure causing you to re-build the system. And the theoretical drive speed is not the same as actual boot time you will see or what you get from rendering. If you know what you are getting into with RAID 0 it's really up to you what you do with the setup.

I don't even remember the last time I bothered setting up a RAID setup in any normal use computer that was not a server.

  1. No, it can't do that.
  2. In some use cases, RAID 0 + NVMe can be slower than individual drives. The RAID overhead borks up the magical RAID speed with small file sizes (4k)
Doing large movements of sequential data? Sure...revel in that speed.
The OS? Not so much.


And an uber fast boot time is waaaay down on my list of priorities. My system 'boots up' in the 1 or 2 seconds it takes for the monitors to wake up, because I don't turn it off.

I run 2 adata nvme ssd in raid 0 on my TR 1920x machine. and my system boots from off before my screen turns on lol . Of course now im having weird issues with booting (unrelated to the boot device as its consistent accross ever OS and every boot medium USB SSD ETC.) Highly recommend it. look into the adata sx8200 they are the best value for the $ right now. Amazon has 256gb ones for $55. My read speeds are around 6500 and my write speeds are 2100 in raid 0. Also my apps burst open like no other ssd setup ive ever had. Just my 2 cents. It cost me $100 to run that setup so why not?
 
I wouldn't be Raiding something so impportant as you claim - it makes no sense at all for a bootable drive.
Sure RAID 2 other drives that aren't on your boot - not a problem, but you won't see many real world advantages.
You could just go down the root of Nvme as boot, Raid 2 standard SSD's - that will start to come closer to the Nvme speed 2x

Not worth the risk, and as someone pointed out already, how can it be super fast when you have low speed ram
