New to DVD burning help

Hi all
i need some help with DVD buring as i just got a DVD-writer (Pioneer DVD-107D)

Before when using a CD-writer whenever i put in a Blank CD in tray Windows(XP) pops up a window saying i have a blank CD inserted
but now when i put a DVD-R in my DVD-Writer it doesnt say this but stil does with CD-Rs is this normal???

also im want to burn some data files onto a DVD-R with Nero
how should i do this???
before i had this DVD-writer i tried buring data files on CDs with Nero, but all the files names was changed like all lower case changed to higher case.
so i started using the built in WindowsXP CD burner to burn data files
but because Windows doesnt reconise these DVD-Rs i cant try it, and dunno if WindowsXP just support CD and not DVD buring

any1 can give me some help???
what settings should i use with Nero??

get rid of nero cause i think it BLOWS!......... Sonic Record now Dx works flawlessly.... very easy menu to guide you through everything.

i use dvd Shrink the newest version..... some ritek 4x dvd-r's a trip to block buster and you are set!

as for regular crap you download like mp3's and you wanna back them up, i say again record now Dx works amazin...... just select data disc, add your folder or files and click the red dot and let it fly..... extrememly dummy proof

Neither of those ever worked for me. If neither of those worked for you then try downloading DVD Decrypter and TMPGEnc DVD Author...I know DVD Decrypter is freeware but I don't know about the other. I got it off of http://suprnova.org ,this is a bittorent site so you have to download the program to use it. I suggest Burst!, it works for me. TMPGEnc would be loacted under "Apps". So you rip the DVD with DVD Decrypter then back it up with TMPGEnc DVD Author. And you back up just the Video itself, none of the extras or menus or anything.
