I am buying a second hand Xbox with a 10gb HDD. I will need to upgrade to a
bigger HDD (120gb).
Are the HDDs used in the Xbox the same as those used in computers.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, the HDDs used in the Xbox are essentially the same as those used in
PCs, and there are ways of adding a higher-capacity HDD to the console.
However, I wouldn't upgrade the HDD if you're planning on using the Xbox
Live service -- MS won't let any modified Xbox log onto the service;
presumably, this includes units with larger, non-factory installed hard
drives (although it wouldn't surprise me if there are work-arounds for
this as well).

Hi
You wil need to MODCHIP your xbox first.
Dont go onto XBox Live with you XBOX until AFTER you have
replaced the HDD with the larger one.
When you first go to Xbox Live they register your Xbox EPROM ID and
the serial ID of you HDD. If these then change you get banned.
This is called the Marriage Theory and you can read losts about it
on various Xbox websites.

even a "newbie" should know better than to post an x-box question in a
playstation2 group.
