News Newegg Launches GPU Trade-In Program: $561 For a RTX 3090 Ti

$561 For a 24GB RTX 3090 Ti pretty much covers a new 12GB RTX 4070, at least if you don't count the taxes. DLSS 3, baby! Get it while it's hot!

EDIT: sarcasm, people. You'd have to be pretty dumb to exchange the most powerful card of the last generation that only came out in mid-2022 for the gimped underperforming mess that should have been called 4060. A joke, see?

Why would anyone in their right mind trade in a 3090 ti that has three two* times the Vram, and around 20% more performance for a 4070? I mean, you can try to argue for power consumption, but people who bought a 3090 ti were not concerned about the power consumption...

Technically it's twice the VRAM, and according to my tests, and roughly equivalent performance. (3090 Ti does pull ahead a bit more at 4K ultra.)

I want to dump on Newegg here, but selling on Ebay is a nightmare these days. There are so many scams, bogus messages, demands to change shipping address (never do this), bots, and other BS on that platform. I think Newegg should be providing more money when you trade-in during the purchase of a new product. At least they're not being GameStop levels of evil here.

Another thing -- it would be nice to stop being spammed with generic marketing emails. Show me a sale on the thing(s) I want or a promo code that applies to them. I do not care about anything else. This goes for all retailers.

@JarredWaltonGPU They are offering more than Jawa, which is really intriguing. Jawa started a GPU trade-in program last year, and they're offering $511 for a Founders 3090 TI. You would think a smaller company could offer more since there's less overhead. Of course people are better off selling on eBay, I think Newegg is banking on the hope that people don't want to deal with potential headaches from scam artists.

The 3rd party issues I have had are endless. I make a point to only use the sold and shipped options by newegg unless there are no other choice and desperation wins.

Fanboy's who are slaves to marketing...But to be fair its more of a side grade than down grade in performance (yes you lose half your ram though with the 4070Ti). Unless you're gaming at 4K as Jarred's chart shows at which point you get a nice chunk of FPS due to the extra VRAM/bandwidth/etc from the 3090Ti.

I'm sure Jawa is doing the same thing, reselling refurbished at a profit. But Newegg ought to easily beat Jawa on pricing, since it already has a "reputable" website for computer enthusiasts. I still think anyone selling an RTX 3090 for under $650 is an idiot, or $750 for a 3090 Ti. It's really not that hard to sell on eBay or Facebook Marketplace and avoid scammers.

Agreed i'm seeing 3090's for $899 CAD = 665 USD!
 
Bad thing with eBay is their 30 day money back guarantee. Once sold a working 5800x cpu on there. Haven’t been burnt to many times, but on that case the person who bought it apparently didn’t know what they were doing. Tried to install it into an a320 board for one thing. Then they were having tpm errors like you sometimes get when swapping a cpu then complaining to me that it didn’t work.

While I get it, kind of like if you are buying these types of items you should have an idea. Keep in mind I’d tested the cpu before sending it out. The buyer wanted to return it so ok that’s fine so they were happy. I get the cpu back and it was not put in the plastic cpu tray correctly and arrived with bent pins. I ended up selling it like that as is to someone else who wanted to take a chance but at the time i was slightly frustrated with that situation.

I avoid selling on EBay for this reason.

I use kijiji in canada sort of like craigslist.

And I don't sell products to noobs and I will validate that before I sell you anything.
 
Well 35% profit is not much for ICT-reseller so these prices what they offer are rather desent. Ofcourse you get more money if you sell directly… But you have to use time and efford for it.
But any company who buys old stuff and resell it.. Expect to get normally at least 50% profit… This is much less than that.

Your chart compares it to 4070 Ti, not 4070, though. 4070 Ti costs around $800, so you'd have to do much better than 3090 Ti. But then again, DLSS 3, baby! Totally worth it !

True. Missed that you said base 4070. I mean, if you had a choice between 3090 Ti for $550 and 4070 for $550... well, there are some reasons to prefer the latter. Power being the biggest. But you'd REALLY have to care about power and efficiency. Since I did the 4070 Ti vs. 3090 Ti before, here's 3090 Ti vs. 4070:

37% faster on average at 4K definitely isn't chump change. But good luck finding a 3090 Ti for $550. :-D

I would trade in my 3070 but the bigger question is can Newegg be trusted now? After that investigation done by GamersNexus I lost all trust from them, I go to Amazon or walk into a Microcenter now for PC parts . I just have a feeling that they will say some BS oh the card doesn't work or some other crap. I just can't take that chance 😑

Yep, the article seemed to miss this point. If one were selling the card on eBay, they risk the possibility of someone getting the card, claiming it doesn't work, and returning another defective card in its place for a refund. Or simply breaking it due to user error and requesting a refund. Then, eBay sides with the buyer, and you will be stuck with a defective card worth hardly anything, and not much to do about it. There is almost certainly less risk involved when trading it in to Newegg, even if the potential return is lower. Newegg needs to account for things like that possibly cutting into their profits when they resell the card. They also need to pay for testing and refurbishing these cards. There could potentially be some intermittent problem with the hardware that doesn't get caught by testing as well, but that gets reported by the eventual buyer. Plus they have to deal with shipping costs, both for the person buying the card, as well as for the one trading it in.

And looking at "sold" listings on eBay, a number of 3090 Tis have been going for well under $800, so the article's suggested "average" price of $881 might be a bit generous. Unless someone has already done a lot of selling on eBay with a lot of positive feedback, they might potentially struggle to find a buyer willing to pay anything that's not well below average. Some of these sold listings may only bring in around $650 to the seller after fees are accounted for.

The markup is likely not really all that that different from something like trading in a car in at a dealership. And I suspect a lot of people probably don't want to mess with selling a graphics card on their own, and would be plenty willing to make maybe 25% less from the sale of their card just for the convenience of having someone else deal with it. And in the case of the 3090 Ti, if someone is already trading in one of those, they might not care all that much about losing a bit of money off the sale. We're talking about a card that launched for around $2000 just a year and a half ago, that has already lost over half its value on the used market.
