NF7-S RAID Question

I just bought an Abit NF7-S Version 2. I would like to use 2 hard drives in
a RAID 0 configuration. Can these drives be connected to the IDE ports as
master/slave? The manual isn't clear on this issue. It seems that they may
have to be connected to the SATA ports. Which means I would have to buy
more hardware because I don't have SATA hard drives.

Please Help
Thanks

Hi -

The NF7-S only supports RAID on the SATA ports.

The IDE are just your garden variety controllers.

Get yourself a "Promise FastTrak100 TX2" RAID controller off eBay, they can
be had for $30-40, and work TERRIFIC, easy to setup too. It also gets your
HDs off the same controllers as the optical drives, something to avoid
anyway. They support RAID0 (stripping), RAID1 (mirroring), and SPANNING
(just a bunch of drives). I have one in each of three machines, love 'em.
A heck of a lot cheaper than buying SATA drive replacements (or even SATA
adapters, which aren't all that dependable anyway).

HTH

For onboard RAID you need to use the SATA connectors.
Your board should have come with 1 ABIT Serillel PATA-SATA adapter which
will connect an IDE drive to SATA.
So, if you buy another 1 you will be able to use 2 IDE drives in RAID on the
SATA controller (I've done this).

No RAID on IDE ports, BUT, you can use the included adapter for the
SATA controller, and then make your RAID array.
You just have to buy 1 more adapter for your other IDE drive.

Its not what I would do. The SIL3112 onboard Raid controller is a better
performer than the the Promise one. And 1 extra parallel > serial adapter
is a lot cheaper than the Promise card too. (You get one with the nf7-s
anyway).

Then you get neater cabling and better airflow with the thin sata cables,
and you don't need to have another PCI card in your case, which I think is
overall a bit more messy and can even reduce overclocking potential.

So I would just buy an extra Parallel > Serial adapter and your set to go.

Chip.
