Yes, the Switch 2 is "woefully underpowered compared to..." checks notes... systems that are twice the price. My guy, who is out here dropping $1000 on handheld systems? Who can afford that? If the Switch 2 matched the power of those systems, it would also have to match the price.

Also, to people saying phones are more powerful: yes, and they're also more expensive. If you're talking the brand new flagship phones, you're not going to get one for $450. People forget how much phones cost because they get them through trade-in and/or expensive plans.

Edited to add: Also, my phone regularly overheated when I was outside playing Pokémon Go.

Samsung 8nm is a really horrible process though. It held ampere back and and allowed a huge performance uplift for Ada. TSMC's offerings back then were already superior in speed and power usage. If/When this design is ported over to a newer TSMC node it will run much cooler and give better battery life.
The same problems apply to products out of TSMC foundries and elsewhere. It isn't any one foundry's deficiencies, it's physics. Things get much more difficult below 28nm and really hit a wall at 16nm. This is why the PS4 only got one die shrink, even though there was plenty of market if the price could be significantly reduced again. This is why there have only been minor die shrink for current gen machines. This is why prices have gone up severely. The old rules do not apply anymore.

Do you really believe console makers now disdain the less affluent audience they've embraced in the past? That the lack of price cuts to the current gen in the way that was common for decades is something they've simply chosen not to do anymore?

On point. People want more from these devices than is fiscally or physically possible. Economics and physics are what they are. We either get less performance for less money or more performance for more money. The sliding scale is pretty much set in stone atp. Long gone are the days when we got performance leaps like the PS1 to PS2 or even PS2/XB to PS3/XB360. We are hitting the limits of silicon and no amount of complaining/trolling will fix it.

Also, most peoples phones are not more powerful, even flagship ones.
Yes, they have a *CPU* that clocks higher, but nintendo have intentionally diverted that power budget from the CPU to the more powerful nvidia GPU.

Though the flagship iphones do give it a run for the money: if it wasn't for thermal throttling (heh) under sustained loads. But the flagship iphones are well ahead of any other phone vendor when it comes to gaming performance.
