Nintendo's Next Gaming Console Is The NES Classic Edition

Now this is pretty cool. Finally something released that seems unique, or maybe just because I'm fond of the older games. Pretty amazing game list for the ones they chose, hard to complain there. It's quite a bit smaller than the original but the throwback to the classic is great.

Not to mention the price seems solid, $60 for the console, all those games and only $10 for another controller? This is where gaming is missing the mark these days, something simple and affordable.

For those who think it's overpriced they're either failing to remember the cost of games or too young to have bought them for the original nes. The original game system was more expensive than that, came with a single controller and only 1, maybe 2 games.

Back in '87, '88 when games like zelda II and smb 2 were hitting store shelves they were selling for $70-75 and people were mobbing each other to get one. I believe zelda II was around $78 and that was almost 30yrs ago. Adjust for inflation and a $70 game in 1988 would cost $142.15 today. I'd say it's a smoking good deal especially for those of us who remember playing the originals back when they were current.

It looks interesting and for the price seems like a good buy, hopefully though there will be a way to expand that game library as I enjoyed the first Double Dragon & Contra series.

If you can hack this device, it would most definitely be cool. Add in a new flash memory with all the ROMs and you have the perfect little NES system for your modern TV. Also, if the controllers are the same quality that were with the original Nintendo, they would be great to modify for a PC or Pi as the aftermarket USB ones (like Buffalo) just don't have the same quality feel to them. Worst case scenario with this device is the case might be perfect for a Pi.

Even without these options/ideas, it's still pretty cool little device; and not that expensive.

Looks like Nintendo is leveraging the only value they have left- as a nostalgia trip. Would be pretty embarrassing if more people bought this than the Wii U.

In classic Nintendo form, this is a rip off of 3rd party units that could do this for years.

I would have liked to see Jackal on the list, but I'm pretty excited about this and will surely buy one when available, just to make my still-working NES console under my TV a little jealous

Anyone liked and played Rygar? It's a fairly difficulty 2D slider game but with tons of fun.

Would love to know how closely this emulates the original system. Good for official speed runs?

There should be some way to blow on a cartridge to get the games working, just to simulate the old experience.

Considering $60 is what a single new game costs that usually sucks, it seems like a bargain to pay that much for a game system and 30 time proven games.

That is very true. If someone says they can't get hours of amusement from at least a few of these games, then they are simply admitting they haven't tried any of them. Or they really don't like to play games.

@George Phillips, yea I had rygar and loved it. Was a pretty difficult game especially when gearing up for the boss fights. I could be wrong but I think it was one of the earlier ones to use both the side scrolling like mario as well as the overview viewpoint like zelda in the same game. High tech lol.

@IInuyasha74, agreed. Many of those games took longer than a few hours. Zelda took me weeks if not months and there was no internet with walkthroughs back then. No real hidden secrets other than a few posted in the NintendoPower magazine if it happened to be featured in one of the issues. The dungeons got so complex I had to draw my own maps on graph paper one room at a time, labeling the doorways, obstacles and enemies encountered.

Nintendo hasn't been able to keep up very well in recent times but to say in classic fashion they rip off others doesn't make much sense. They were around before Sega, Xbox, Playstation etc so who ripped off who? If anything Nintendo took things to a whole new level compared to Atari. Oddly enough most of those classics are still better than the rinse and repeat ripoff crap available on the current consoles.

For that matter if it weren't for Nintendo we might not have had the Playstation considering it started out as a partnership between the two when they were working on a cd based drive for the superfamicom (snes). Unfortunately Nintendo dropped the project and broke the deal with Sony to go with Philips instead. That's when Sony got to work making their first playstation a few years later to rival Nintendo.

It would be cool if it displayed the original 8 bit visuals at 1080p, so the game could be played on modern big screens without looking like soggy fruit loops.

I should've watched the commercial to realize it actually does, so that makes this a pretty decent buy if more games could be added to it.

Here's hoping for a SNES version in the future, or what would be really awesome is some type of Ultra NES that combined the NES, SNES, and N64.

Even SNES emulators are Perfect ..

i'm old, i go back to the atari and coleco vision myself. though the NES was very much a better system when it came out. i had em all back then though i did not go past the SNES myself until the Wii came out

The point, is because this is legal, whereas emulators are legally questionable. The emulators themselves are legal, but if you are in possession of the ROMs themselves is not. There are a few exceptions to this, but in general if you have the ROMs, Nintendo could legally press charges against you for copyright infringement.

is their any time limit for very old software so that they become freeware after that? in the laws ?

I think this a a great deal for 60 bucks. Who cares if it isn't upgradeable. I just wish I could plug my NES Advantage (That is buried in a box somewhere downstairs) into it. Lol.

That wouldn't work for them, They already sell several of these ROMs on the virtual store for its current game consoles. Several of them sell for between $5-$10, and it is one of the features they use to attract users. It also lets them do occasional things like make this console.

There is a time limit when the copyright expires, but it can be renewed. Nintendo is careful about this. There are some games of this era that have become what is known as "abandoneware" and can be legally downloaded and distributed legally. There are sites that are dedicated hosting this content if you search, but it varies from game to game what they can host.
