No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

Toshiba Satellite C655. Get the error message when starting or attempting to start from safe mode. Boot menu is in proper order, but HDD/SSD has no details to the right of it. No idea how this happened. My son got back from his mom's & said he had this problem. I have installation discs if necessary but was hoping to not have to lose all his stuff.

Check the connections inside - maybe a SATA connector is loose.

Installation disk, isn't going to do you any good.

That is just a typical MS generic message, because Windows can't find a boot device.
The installation disk won't find it either, unless you fix the problem.

Is the SSD your Boot Device?
What brand is it?

Found no loose connections, though I'm really not sure what to look for. I removed all the screws from the back & looked inside. Although trying to get the panel apart far enough to see in there caused some flat wiring to come undone. I don't recommend anyone remove the full back panel, only the 2 smaller ones.

I meant the SSD.

I have Satellite L305-S5891, and it comes apart from the top.

I don't know if they are the same, but there is a thin plastic strip just above the F keys.
Removing it exposes screws to the key board.
Remove the keyboard, and your in.
I've been all through mine, because I had to change the screen.

I would Google taking apart you model number.
There are dozens of videos on every laptop, I have ever looked up.

Wow, so much simpler. Now I see how they made those connections...lucky them.

I don't see a name, only codes.

And since I don't really know what I'm looking for...

If it is not an Intel, or a Samsung, the chances are higher, that it has gone bad.
But even Intel, and Samsung, can fail.

Clean that fan too.

Hard drives can be tested with software from the manufacturers sight.
Not sure about SSD, but it is worth a look.
They just run off a CD, so none of the drives have to be working.
