No connections are available with USB adapter

I just finished building my first PC today and after installing windows 8.1 I plugged in a wireless USB adapter to connect to the Internet, however, after putting it in the USB port there were no notifications or indications that windows identified it, no drivers were installed, nothing, and still no connections are available. I tried using another adapter with the same results and I know that both of these work because I used them for my old PC. And yes, the USB ports are working as I am able to use my keyboard or mouse with them.

What wireless usb adapter do you have?
Did you install the drivers for it?
