Hello! I have a C: drive that has my Windows 10 installation and all of my files on it, and I have a D: DVD drive that I don't use. It's a desktop PC that is around 8 years old, and I haven't run a CHKDSK scan in a while.

I first ran sfc /scannow in an Administrator Command Prompt window, and it said that it fixed corrupt files. Then I ran chkdsk c: /f , and I got the prompt to select Y or N to scan the drive next time I restart my PC. I said yes, and restarted my PC soon after.

The PC came on and made it's usual beep sound, but I get no signal on my monitor, so I can't tell if the scan is running or not.

My plan:
I'm going to sleep now, so I won't be able to answer for a good 5 or 6 hours. But I'm going to keep it on through the night, and then if there's still no display in the morning, I'll click the power button. If that doesn't turn it off, I'll pull the plug. And after that, I'll look for a log file to see if the scan actually ran.

My question:
Is there a safer way to go about this, especially in shutting it down if there's still no signal in the morning?

Thank you for reading about my problem, I appreciate it! I would like to give more info like screenshots, but that clearly isn't an option 😉

Solution
how big is the drive?

I would leave it on over night just to be sure. Unless its something like an 8tb hdd, it should be finished by the morning so restart should be safe.

Okay, thank you for the advice! My drive is 2TB. There is a signal and the PC looks fine now. I checked the log file, and it did scan, and with no problems found. I have the strange feeling that my PC comes with no interface for running CHKDSK on restart, but I don't know.
