No more BSOD but now my computer frezzes

Problem is sortof back. I am no longer getting the BSOD but now my computer will just freeze.

I was getting critical processed died BSOD and ended having to do a clean install. That was last week and now my computer will freeze after a 20 mins of use sometimes I am fine all day but recently its every time i turn on my pc.

First the internet shuts off then windows freaks out and i cant bring windows menu or the task manager or even ctl - alt- delete.

Then chrome and every other app will stop responding. I have had task manager open when it happens and cpu goes to 0%.

I have run sfc, done malware scan checked my memory again and it still happens in safe mode with networking. I just uninstalled and reinstalled my nividia drivers thinking that was a problem tried to update my cpu drivers Intel says I am one behind but just keeps installing the same one. When I am at device manager is says my cpu is up to date so w/e.

It also seems to happen faster when i have chrome open and then try an open the new twitch/curse app and play some minecraft.

Its been less than a week since I did a clean install -_- any ideas

This sounds like a bad hard drive.

Windows does screwy things when it can't load what it wants.

Would it be just one of my hard drives and how do I test that or is it my ssd where the os is install?

Working in I.T I've seen hard drives die fast with the telltale clicking.

And I've seen hard drives die slow where programs take forever to launch.

The later seems to be the case here.

Neither safe mode nor a reinstall will fix this.

The easiest way to diagnose this, at least with dells, is with a diagnostic tool built into the bios.

Try pressing F12 as the computer boots to see boot options and there may be a diagnostic option that tests most of the components.

The hard drive being 90% of our "computer crashes".

It would indeed be the boot drive where the os is installed that would need to be tested.

Ssd are more reliable than hard drives but anything can break.

Is this windows 7 with a nvme ssd ?

downlaod hdtune read the hard drive and ssd smart info. from wd download and run there disk tools both short and long tests. download seatools for the seagate.

The 840 evo 120 doesn't have much write endurance.

I bought the 1 terabyte capacity to try to avoid it.

So at least for the ssd with HDtunepro i think everything was fine did an error check and nothing showed up. Took me a while to remember what Samsung magician was and smart said its good condition

Cant do the long test on the wester digital drives as it takes 2 hours and my computer will freeze. i am doing a test than restarting my computer cause it wont last

The short test passed on all the wd drives

The next step is reducing the system components to the bare minimum needed to boot.

Remove your graphics card and use the onboard.

Remove all ram except for a single stick in DIMM1.
If possible try each stick in DIMM1 one at time.

Storage devices look good but i would still use the single ssd.

If this setup becomes stable keep adding parts until you find the part that crashes.

I guess the silver lining is that your crashes appear to happen often so it should not take long to see which part is causing the issue.

If after this you can't find the part the only logical solution would be a faulty motherboard.

Well when I went to check my ssd with Samsung magician is said my firmware was out of date after updating it Its not crashing in 20 min anymore.

Still have to see if it will after a full day of use but maybe that was the problem or all the health checks did something to no idea but it seems to be working now.

I'm optimistic this fixes your issue but if it worked fine for years before a firmware update an old firmware probably isn't the cause.

I updated my firmware when I first bought my 840 evo about 3 years ago and since I never had any issues I have never updated since.

The issue started after the latest windows 10 updates so maybe something in there that caused this issue or its not the firmware running all the test did something. If the problem comes back I will start testing all the hardware like you said. Right now its gonna be hard to test when it no longer freezes in 20 mins.
