no one noticed via kt133a doesnt play mp3's!!!

i bought 4 aopen kt73proa m.b.'s with via kt133a chipset and 2 ecs k7vza m.b.'s w/the same and NONE of them will play mp3's!!!! both my partner and i have over 3,000 mp3's apiece, none shared, and on both systems 90% of the mp3's skip badly or make a pounding sound throughout the songs. no one has noticed this? all boards came from different retailers. i have called the retailer tech support and the board manufacturers tech support and no one has any idea what the problem is. i have removed all sound cards reformatted and tried onboard sound, all with the same results. i have updated the 4-in-1 via drivers with no luck. all the mp3's play perfectly on other "non kt133a" systems. it is impossible for me to believe we are the only ones with these issues. can anyone PLEASE HELP??? tdean27893@aol.com

Never heard that (that kt133a can't read MP3's) , it sounds like a configuration problem. Do you have shared IRQ's between your hardware components? If not done already, you can try update your BIOS and use all the latest drivers from the internet for your hardware. By the way, 4 in 1 driver should be the first thing after the OS to install. Is the MP3's are from the same source? Maybe your media is corrupted.

You've got other problems.

Dirty cdrom, fragged hd, poor memory, overclocked cpu, ACPI enabled, corrupt codecs, corrupt os (i'd count on this one if you have windows).

3 R's will probably cure the problem. Reparition, Reformat, Reinstall.

no... all the mp3's are on an mp3 server. the hard drive is brand new... corsair pc-133 ram. the mp3s have come from many different sources but they work perfectly on my 533 celeron machine. i have reformatted and reinstalled etc 20 or 30 times if you count all the boards. this is aweful....

yes, but even when i copy them over, they sound horrible. and i copy the very same ones to other systems and they are fine. its the weirdest thing. other "non kt133a" computers on the network can play them fine. it is only with these m.b.'s.

I lurk around in these forums a lot, and I don't think I've read anything here before about problems with kt133a not playing mp3's. I'm not familiar with AOpen or ECS MB's. Anyone have this problem with an Asus or Abit board?

First do this, eliminate the network as a source of the problem altoghether. By means other than the network copy, a mp3 file to the hard drive of one of the kt133a boards, Then play it. I repeat, do not copy these via the network. Burn a few mp3's to a cd-r and then copy from that to your desktop and play it. See if the problem still exists. Also, check boards website for possible bios updates.

Tell me what sound cards you are using and if they are sharing any irq's with outher devices. Also, tell me if the nics are sharing irq's as well.

thank you for helping.... this is actually quite important. i copied the mp3's from cd's right onto my hard drive. they still sound the same. i have tried the onboard audio (w/latest driver update) and a sound blaster live platinum 5.1. here is the irq info you requested: 10 - sound blaster, 10 - via tech 3038 pci to usb universal host controller (twice) 11 - ethernet card, 11 - acpi irq holder for pci irq steering. the bios i have is from 3/14/01 and the newest one gives me "bios not recognized" error when i run it. i hope there is something in there that can help....

the sb 16 emulation is alone on irq5. last night i diabled legacy device setting in bios to see if there would be any improvement, but there was not.

I have an A7V133 using the same KT133A chipset, and mp3s sound great for me. It's not the chipset, or at least it's not just the chipset. Do you have any USB devices? It looks like you have the SB card sharing an IRQ with the USB. What IRQ is your video card on? Physically, which slots are the video, sound, and NIC cards in (and are there any other cards)? Do you have DMA switched on for your drives? Finally, what OS are you using? Sounds like 9x but please confirm. Check to make sure you are not running background processes after boot-up, e.g. in startup or as part of the ACPI setup.

My setup, albeit with a different board: video card in AGP slot, uses IRQ11, slot 1 empty, NIC in slot 2, uses IRQ10, sound in slot 3, uses IRQ5 (SB emulation uses IRQ 7 shared with LPT1 port I am not using), and modem card in slot 5, uses IRQ3 (shared with USB, COM2 disabled in BIOS to free up IRQ3).

Here is something else to try, unistall the sounblaster card via add/remove programs. Make sure all traces of the dirver files are gone. Remove liveware as well. Download the updtaed drivers from Creative but only the drivers not liveware. Run the install and try without liveware being installed. If the problem goes away then it is a software issue. Many soundblaster problems have been solved this way.

05 - sb16 emulation
07 - ecp printer port (lpt 1)
10 - acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
10 - acpi irq holder for pci irq steering
10 - sound blaster live!
10 - via tech 3038 pci to usb universal host controller
10 - via tech 3038 pci to usb universal host controller
10 - winfast geforce 256 ddr display adapter
11 - ethernet adapter
the sound blaster isnt the problem b/c i had same problem with onboard audio.
you asked about dma being switched.... how do i tell? i selected it when installing via 4-in-1 drivers.
i have stopped all background programs from running. what is acpi setup?
i am running win98se.

I have the same experience. Have K7VZA and use only onboard sound chip (no SB Live). Clean new install, Win2000. Most of my MP3s are not listenable (different players tried), resp. are interferenced with this pounding sound. My previous Intel based machine used to play these perfectly. Any real ideas (forget these 'Reformat, Reinstall' etc...)?
