No power cord on external hard-drive

External hard-drive to download Dish receiver doesn't have a power cord. Do I need a power cord?

is it USB and 2.5 inches? if so it is most likely powered by the USB port.
USB cannot power a 3.5 inch drive but the smaller externals are bus powered.
