Hi Folks,

I am working on my first build and I've run into a snag that I don't seem to be able to solve on my own / with googling.

I tried installing all the hardware before the first boot and that didn't work so I stripped it to the bare bones (cpu, cooler, ram, disc drive, ssd) and was able to install windows 8, using the mb HDMI output and a usb mouse and keyboard. Then when I installed the graphics card (Msi gtx 980) and booted it up I got no signal and the USB ports also appear to be lifeless. Now after removing the graphics card it's still showing no signal and I don't seem to be getting power to use either.

Thanks for the help

Solution
As soon as you can download something go grab HWinfo. Its free and will log temps. And lots of other things. What you want from it is on the Sensors tab.

Alright sounds good, thank you for all your help, I'm hoping I just stumble on a solution by doing another teardown & rebuild but I'm probably going to end up RMAing the motherboard and CPU and beginning again.

If no one comes up with anything else I'll just pick your most recent post as the solution

Update: Resolution is suddenly better out of nowhere - just changed when I inserted the motherboard's included cd and started installing the drivers

Keep this up, and it will not only fix itself, it will convert into a massive mainframe and take over the planet!! LOL

I just hope you still have some hair when this is over with.

Yeah, this definitely wasn't as low stress as I'd hoped when I decided to build a PC, still I've resolved to soldier on, though I've only got a couple days left before I can't RMA the processor unfortunately.

I managed to reboot the computer without it dying on me, I'm worried that it'll all come crashing down if I try to turn the power supply off.

The resolution isn't perfect - it seems like its about one desktop icon too big for the TV in every direction, but switching the resolution leads to a pixellated nightmare and the image is flickering slightly but otherwise it seems stable as of right now.

Update: Sorted out the aspect ratio, going to try connecting to the internet - still terrified to power down the computer - wondering if there's a way to check the processor temperature outside of the bios

Sorry for not updating y'alll sooner. Happy news, I went into a pc store and went to get some technical support and as soon as I plugged it in it functioned perfectly and has ever since - no idea what the problem is but it appears to have been completely resolved.

Thanks for all the help you're a wonderful bunch
