"No signal Detected"

Im trying to setup my second monitor which is a Benq GL2460 and i used a vga to dvi adapter. Everything is plugged in and very tight but it keeps saying no signal detected. What should I do? Should I return the adapter and buy another one? Please help!! I dont really understand why it isnt working since everything is plugged into the right ports.
