Hi all,

I need fresh brains to try and work this thing out.

I'm trying to fix a Windows 7 Home laptop (Compaq Presario CQ58) and the sound isn't working.

I've tried everything that I know to try and solve this thing and it just isn't having it.

The two devices/drivers that were installed were the AMD HD Audio and Realtek HD Audio.

I've turned off Automatic Driver Installation and i've also done it through the Regedit as the Windows way didn't work. I've uninstalled both devices and done a restart. Windows has tried to install them again but it didn't work (good!)

I installed the driver manually for the AMD - did a restart - no sound. Checked Device Manager and that was the only device installed.

Uninstalled - rebooted - and re-installed the Realtek HD audio driver. Did a reboot - SOUND WORKS. Checked the Device Manager and it says Realtek HD Audio.

I do a shut down and power back up - NO SOUND. Check the Device Manager and it seems to have changed to High Definition Audio Device.

All drivers that I've used are the latest ones.

I can't work it out! Please can someone help me!

Cheers,

Nick

But the sound does work - it just doesn't seem to work after a complete shut down. It works as it should if the system is restarted.

Tried it. All works perfectly until I shutdown and start the laptop back up again.

I can't figure this one out. The last thing I want to do is re-install the OS.

Let me get this straight, you have Realtek HD and High Def audio?

I was having a similar issue because my graphics card has HDMI and sometimes use that, but not always.

On the speaker icon in the taskbar right click and choose the playback devices option. Then on the box that pops up click on the HD Audio and then click properties (or configure, can't remember which right now and I'm at work). On the next screen that appears there is a drop down list at the bottom, set it to disable the device. Then click OK and go back to the first menu screen it brought up and right click the Realtek HD and set as default

Yeah the laptop has Realtek HD and High Def Audio

When the laptop is restarted the audio device is Realtek Audio and the sound works perfectly. But when I do a shutdown and start back up again the sound changes to High Def Audio and no sound works at all. But when I restart the audio sorts itself out and all is fine with the world!

I'll try what you suggested and see if it works. I'll keep you posted! 😀

[EDIT]

After shutdown I have no sound - so I did as you suggested and disabled the High Def Audio device: side note: it did say that it couldn't detect any sound peripherals e.g. headphones. The speaker option was unavailable. It wasn't disabled, it just wasn't functioning.

I can't work it out!

i have had a a Compaq CQ58 in for repair for this exact problem i can only gather that it is a driver issue as i receive the same problems as yours restart is fine but as soon as you shut down it tells me that it is using a digital audio source instead of my analogue internal speaker and when i try to change them over it is not detecting the onboard speakers , and believe me re installing the operating system have gave me no joy i have restored factory image and also preformed a fresh install of windows all resulting in the same i will keep everybody updated as to when i find a solution to this problem the next thing i will be tackling are the drivers

Yup, you're right.

After doing a recovery install of windows the problem still persists!

The issue is with the bios version
I have just solved the same problem, the bios version on the laptop was f.29, but on the HP site for the full model number of the CQ58-125EA was only f.27, so the incorrect version had been installed/updated.
I download the correct version from the HP support website, ran it it installed and on the full reboot all problems were solved

Why didn't I think of the BIOS!!

Ive been in the business along time, and saw my son struggle with it (amsitguru), it had to be driver related, but with op system reinstall, and the correct drivers from the web, still having the same fault it had to be what was controlling the hardware, providing the information to the Op system - the Bios, from then it was simple and took less than 5 minutes for me to diagnose, and less than 2 miuntes to fix, but thats with 16 years in the trade, needless to say I am not going to let my son forget who fixed it !!!

OK I have exactly the same problem here somehow the bios is now sitting on F29, i have tried to downgrade this using the bios software off the HP website to F27 & F26 and the program runs, restarts and then hangs at boot up and doesnt actually change the bios back to a lower version i have left it to sit for hours and it doesnt boot, i have to then hold the power to boot back up again and its still on F29 Any ideas... been on this for 2 days now.. really frustrating as i have no clue how it managed to upgrade its self to F29 as i have not updated the bios... Can the HP software update the bios without you realising ??

Solved

OK I had to remove the original harddrive, install Win 7 on to it then the bios Downgrade would work its back on to F27 now and confirmed working how its supposed to Sound after Shut Down and Restart now.
