Why would it show up in audio devices otherwise? In any case the monitor also has an audio jack and that doesn't work either.

It should be able to pass audio through to external speakers.

Edit: it worked after I switched to "speakers". The option is now gone and the only option is the PHL one, but the earbuds are still working. Strange, but I won't complain.

My understanding on that monitor is it has no speakers but it has a output for headphones using a HDMI cable for the monitor input.

Windows just sees an HDMI output it can use, it does not know that your monitor does not have speakers. IF if did then you could use them with HDMI out.
