no sound coming through the tv(hdmi) but coming through the headset

my friends pc is working just fine, however hes trying to play audio through his tv instead of his headset, however he can not get sound through his tv even though its set as default for the playback device. you can see the green bar's go up when sound is played on the computer, however there is no sound coming through the tv. it was working just fine but we recently(last night) rebuild his pc with all new components. and yes he has the latest audio drivers for his motherboard. parts are
asrock h97m pro4
gtx 970 msi gaming
i5 4460

Having the motherboard on-board sound card driver isn't the issue here, since it is the HDMI coming from the 970 that is actually handling the audio.

Ensure that the proper selection of GPU drivers are installed.

gpu drivers were set to express installation on geforce experience

What type of cable is carrying the audio?
HDMI?
Optical?
RF Plug?
3.5 mm?

Honestly, my first thought is that the audio cable may be disconnected or could be plugged into an input instead of an out... (but all of that depends on your cable)

Another thing I should mention is that I've had issues with HDMI out audio if it wasn't set as the default playback audio device. One time I swear I had to disable all of the other audio outputs just to get it working...

Also, this should be a no-brainer but make sure the volume on the TV is turned up.

the audio is running through hdmi.

Need to be selecting nvidia HDMI out as the playback device not the onboard HDMI audio out

The nvidia driver package should gave installed this.

If it hasn't do a custom install & make sure to select it.

alright im having him do a uninstall/reinstall of his gpu drivers

it does say nvidia high definition audio, just finished the reinstall of the drivers, still no luck.
