Hi people. I upgraded from a 990 fxa ud3 to a asus maximus hero intel rig, anyway everything seems to be working fine but sound, although optical out is selected from control panel, and I see the green indicator it doesn´t sound. The only thing I've done different compared when I installed the gigabyte board was that this time I connected HD audio, last time the pins were unplugged 'cause basically I don't use any front headphones, could it be that?

Solution
Most motherboards can't output 5.1 through SPDIF. You can't stream that number of channels in PCM through SPDIF...there isn't enough bandwidth. In order to put 5.1 through SPDIF, you have to use compression like DTS or Dolby Digital, and I've never even tried to do that with any computer.

If you want 5.1 from your motherboard, use the 1/8" analog ports built in to the back, my suggestion. If that isn't to your liking, purchase an internal or external sound card.
Update: I just updated the drivers and now it works "fine", but it wont only support 16bit 2 channel , if I go to 5.1 it just wont do, I heard there's a way to "unlock" 5.1 on digital with this board, anyone knows how please?

Well it is a standard home theater, it used to work very well on my Gigabyte Mobo, now it doesn´t work. So far I know I have to use an audio compressiong program like Dolby or DTS in order to send 5.1 through an optical cable, the problem is when I use DTS it doesn't work and my Dolby seems to be damaged, I tried to install it but it says the drivers has a different version or something. What I believe now is that there's some kind of driver conflict since I didn't do a clean install when I changed my mobo and CPU, for now I'm using a stereo cable and I set a 5.1 (stereo) through normal speaker option
