What is the difference, other than size, between these 2 that makes the Noctua that much better?
I have the 212 now but with summer coming up, I need to cool my i7 7700k better. Temps are currently around the mid 30s celcius without overclock.

Your temps are very good.

If you take price to performance ratio out of the equation, then the Noctua NH-D15 beats the Hyper 212 Evo in performance (idle or load).
When it comes to cooling CPUs by dissipating heat, sizes matters and the Noctua NH-D15 is more than twice the weight. It can even beat water coolers like the Corsair H105.

The Scythe Fuma is very good, almost as good as the Noctua NH-D15, just a couple of degrees difference but it cost 1/2 the price.
Make sure to get the the Fuma Rev.B

The Scythe is actually $113 CAD. So almost double. Noctua's D-14 is cheaper but uglier as my case is white with blue lights.

Here
Scythe Fuma Rev.B cost $46
Noctua NH-D14 $75-$80 and the
Noctua NH-D15 $87-$90

Ya, in Canada it's almost doubled.... 🙁

How much of a temp difference would I see between the Evo & the Noctua/Scythe?

Pretty sure I'd read the Hyper212 is marginal for a 7700K....

I'd fork out the extra $40 on the Noctua.....

Mine is quiet, and cool running, never exceeding 68C even on Prime V26.6 (small FFTs) with MCE on (4 cores at 4.5 GHz)

@Sandman1969 - beats the 14 , matches the 15.

Should in theory be better than both but colour plating the heatsink does lose some thermal dissipation

That said , once you hit coolers in this performance bracket the weak point is the thermal interfacing between the cpu die & heat plate in Intel cpu's.

Lets get real about this , noctua owners will bleat on about the performance of the noctua coolers (which I have no argument with at all) , then theyll say they actually like the aesthetics & fan colour - which Ill pick up as a blatant lie - because lets be perfectly honest - those fans are just damn plain ugly!! ;-)

For similar money , the phanteks matches a d15 while looking about 100x better.

For a white themed build its a great choice.

I like mine personally.
