Im the guy asking about the 11 West Digital SCSI drives i just got. Got another question, cant remember all the SCSI levels and wording. WD page doesnt give much info about the WDE 9100, on the actual disk it says:
Single Ended Ultra Fast Wide SCSI -3
I cant recall what speed that is. And the WD site doesnt list this drive as UFW SCSI 3, it just says Ultra 2 SCSI. I know these are 80 pin drives. But i cant imagine why the drive would say UFW SCSI 3 and the website Ultra 2. Last time i got into SCSI heavy i remember that people had different ways of describing different SCSI speeds, and that not everyone was consistent.

Can someone remind me what U.F.W SCSI 3 is, so i get the right controller/RAID card.
No sense wasting money on a card that outperforms my drives, on the other han i do want to maximize the speed and dont want a card that doesnt use all the speed i can.

Thanks, RamaV

You're going to have to determine exactly which WDE9100 model you have.

Model
Numbers Interface Cache
WDE9100-0003 Ultra-SCSI Single-ended 50-pin Narrow 512 KB
WDE9100-0007 Ultra-SCSI Single-ended 68-pin Wide 512 KB
WDE9100-0008 Ultra-SCSI Single-ended 80-pin Wide 512 KB

AV Optimized Models
Model Numbers Interface Cache
WDE9100-AV0016 Ultra-SCSI / Ultra2 SCSI 68-pin 1 MB
WDE9100-AV0017 Ultra-SCSI / Ultra2 SCSI 80-pin 1 MB

Model
Numbers Interface Cache
WDE9100-0024 Ultra-SCSI / Ultra2 SCSI 68-pin 512 KB
WDE9100-0025 Ultra-SCSI / Ultra2 SCSI 80-pin 512 KB

AV Optimized Models
Model
Numbers Interface Cache
WDE9100-AV0030 Ultra-SCSI / Ultra2 SCSI 68-pin 4 MB
WDE9100-AV0034 Ultra-SCSI / Ultra2 SCSI 80-pin 4 MB

If you have an UltraFast Wide 80pin then I'd guess you have a WDE9100-0008 but presumably the full number is on the drive label?

Here is an explanation of SCSI specs. Whilst it doesn't actually mention SCSI-3 it seems logical that it corresponds to Ultra SCSI 20Mb/sec.

Yup and here is what i see on the back of the HD:

9.1 GB Single ended Ultra Fast Wide SCSI-3 Interface
WD MDL WDE9100-9108A4

Cant seem to figure which that is....

The strange numbering could be becuase the drive was supplied through an OEM such as Compaq or Dell. Still, it seems consistent with it being a WDE9100-0008 drive. The specs say it has a transfer rate from disk cache to host of 40Mb/s which is consistent with it being a 16bit Ultra Wide SCSI.
