Non plug and play memory

Hi, doing my research before diving into a new PC build. It’s been a while since I did this, so learning about all the new technology.

Have what I hope is a simple straight forward question and answer.

Looking at RAM for a build. It says is NOT plug and play.

My question about this is, will it have a default setting that will allow the memory to work and then I can adjust in the uefi? Or will it HAVE to be configured before doing anything else? Ive been reading about manually setting timings and that sort of things. Just wondering if they are default to something and will work?

Thanks for the responses,
Jeff

Where did you see something specifcialyl mentioned as NOT plug & play?

I assume what it's attempting to say is out of the box, the ####MHz speed quoted is not the default.
For example, if you buy a kit sold as "3200MHz", when you install it & boot, it'll default to the JEDEC standard profile of either 2133 or 2400MHz.
You'd then need to enable XMP or DOCP (Intel/AMD respectively) to run the higher speeds.

On an Intel front, it's not too much of a concern. Enable XMP & you should be good to go.
On an AMD front, it can be a little more complicated.

I found it on the hyperX Predator product page. http://

I can’t figure out how to post a screen shot, but its down at the bottom of the page.

I found a video for doing what you described above, but wondered if it had a default setting and I wouldn’t have to get into the Bios to start?

I have no idea why they would list it in such a way..... My best guess is because a couple of those kits (the ones with a "no" for plug & play) go to 4000MHz and beyond, those have to be manually configured opposed to setting XMP and forgetting it. That's just a guess though.

The "default" will be 2400 MHz JEDEC standards on those kits. While you could just use them to install Windows & function normally, that would defeat the purpose of buying such a kit.

I could get my link to the video to show, but if you click the 2nd http in my one reply, it takes you to a video and shows how to “activate” or switch ram profiles. When looking at supported ram on my mother boards spec page, if I look at certain model numbers, it will show profile 1 and profile 2 etc.

I found the video after asking this question, so I think I found my own answer.

What I gather is, to get this memory to work, you have to go into the uefi and choose a profile. It doesn’t come with a default setting.
