So this is the hardware i have already but deciding on the last components to buy:

Corsair 650D
Asus p8z68 v-pro
i5 2500k (keeping at stock clocks unless it bottlenecks whatever card i get)
Hyper 212 evo
Asus Blu-Ray
8gb corsair vengeance 1600mhz
Crucial M4 256gb sata III
Seasonic X-850 watt psu
Video card ???
SSD ???
***edit: running windows 7 home 64 bit not sure if it matters

I'm somewhat of a noob and this will only be my 2nd build. Looking for a gpu that will max most games with full AA @ 1920x1080 on a 46" led 120hz tv (if that matters). Not sure if a single 6970 will cut it or do i need a 7970? Looking to be future proofed for a while and max out Diablo 3 when it comes out as well. Thanks for any input, Jeff.

Solution

Games coming out in the next few years will make better and better use of DX11, and GPUs will get better and better at running these new features like tessellation. We're seeing that with the HD 7000 series, and we'll see it with the GTX 600 series, too.

DX11 slows games down on current mainstream systems, but OP is building a future-proof semi-high-end system and games on a large 120Hz display which allows him to see framerates up to 120fps. If OP's willing to pay, an HD 7970 will do wonders...

I'm astonished to you only getting around 43 fps on ultra settings. I have a MSI 7970 at 1090/1375 and i'm getting around 50-80 fps on ULTRA (Depending on the map/player count - Also i dont consider looking at the wall to get 120+ fps as part of my fps observations - only in fights/open areas). My CPU is only clocked at 3.3 atm (Due to Summer ambient temps in my room, so i had to de-clock it for the time being).

Here are my current settings i actually play with and my rationale for them. You may be interested in them to raise your FPS, or you may not.
Bear in mind, this is my personal choice so don't take it as a fact sheet.
Texture quality => ultra (get the finest detail possible for clarity)
Shadows => medium (high + ultra => more pretty but actually make it harder for me to play because of the additional eye candy + dark areas. Also i barely notice the difference when i'm actually focusing on playing the game and not "comparing" differences)
Effects => low (i dont really care about this lol but medium/high is good if u want explosions/better light emmissions etc)
Mesh => Ultra (i don't like things constantly "popping up" as i come closer to them, extremely distracting in competitive play).
Terrain quality => high (enough to stop terrain "changing" too much, so it doesnt get distracting (besides i dont even look at the terrain.. i focus on the enemy infront of me or where they potentiall could be)
Terrain decoration => high (same thing as above, dont want too many rocks/flowers popping out. Also higher settings => denser grass, could be a disadvantage because its harder to see enemies proning in the grass etc)
Motion blur => off (i personally love this.. makes the game look realistic, but it diminishes your peripheral vision/some lag for me while aiming so i turn it off)
FFXA => OFF (turning it on makes it look real once again, but its too blurry. dont like it).
MSAA => x2 (crispen's everything up reasonably well, i will explain why i dont use x4 below).
HBAO => off (once again ,it makes the game more realistic, but also is bad eye candy for me. Some areas become dark etc, harder to see clearly).

Now with my above settings, i am able to maintain a average 85 FPS (i cap my fps at 85 to eliminate massive fluctuations. Some maps like seine crossing DM, i get like 100fps + most of the time but i want 85avg across the board). There are SOME instances where i dip below to 65-75 (depending on the map/64 player TDM maps espeically) I choose these settings for extremely smooth gameplay - i'm sensitive to lower fps. As i want 85 fps avg, that is why i dont use MSAAx4 which will drop my fps by around 15% (another 8-18 fps).

Check this guide out more if you want to optimize bf3 to your personal liking but know how it will affect fps.

Here is another VERY VERY good console command that will give you another...... 5-15 FPS and has no visible effect to image.
Type "WorldRender.DxDeferredCSPathEnable 0".
And to reduce mouse input lag also use this console command
"RenderDevice.TripleBufferingEnable 0" <-- its on by default .
IF you create a "user.cfg" file and type those commands inside (open it with notepad) and place it in your directory Programfiles(x86)/Origin Games/Battelfield3 it should automatically apply those on start up.
Try that, with FRAPS or Render.DrawFps 1 on and see the impact it makes.

ALso there will be new drivers in the future to further increase fps, especially for bf3 i hope as its very popular and a benchmark favourite.

Hope this helps you regarding your BF3 expectations

nSadly there is no such thing as future proof and DX11 is dependent on developer support not hardware capability and being majority of major developers put the majority of there resources towards the consoles that only run DX9 that's where it will stay for now.
