Northbridge fan replacement?

I have a gigabyte 7dx mb and the fan on the northbridge chip is making a very loud noise, I presume it is dying.

I bought a new fan the TT blue orb which is too big. So I plan on buying another fan but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the old one off. My other mb has white clips that hold the fan the the mb this one has nothing.

Also how do I measure the size of the fan and is it safe to run it with the fan unplugged or am I better off running it with the loud noise?

It's really bad that Gigabyte didn't pick the right northbridge fan for their mobos. I think G'byte screwed up this time with their first implementation of fan in the northbridge. I've seen several complains in this forum before by the disgruntled G'byte owners about the noise of their NB fans. Unfortunately, I'm also one of the owners who have the same problem.

Here are some of the past posts regarding this matter which I hope you find them helpful:

I bought this little generic chipset cooler package (well actually it was a Comp USA brand) for $10. It came with a little black aluminum heatsink with 2 screw holes on the sides, a green heatsink of the same size, but the fins were shaped differently, and a smaller green heatsink, looks like it would fit a southbridge well.

It also came with a few thermal pads and a compound/paste, and some screws and what not.

The main thing I got it for though actually was this little 40mm fan. I looked at the label and it is a Jetaway 5,300 RPM fan. I haven't heard it making any loud noise since I have put it on my northbrige's heatsink.

Oh, and it also came with a 3 to 4 pin adapter (ATX power supply or motherboard fan header, either will do).

Worked for me 🙂

Well it said 5,300 RPM on the back of the package, and like around 30db I think. Let's just say I don't hear it over any of the other parts in my case. I have a pure copper heatsink for my Athlon XP with a 4,500 RPM fan. A system exhaust blower (it is kind of shaped like a U, and has this circle inside with alot of little fins in it, looks a bit like this http://www.kingwin.com/product.asp?cid=7&pid=19 ). And of course my LeadTek GeForce 4 has it's own fan. I don't notice any noise that I haven't heard with my 2 fans and exhaust blower. So it might be slightly loud, but I guess its noise is being drowned out by even louder parts *shrug*
