Northbridge heatsink and thermal compound

Ok i have a MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard Am3.


The North Bridge Heatsink i unscrewed cause i had plans to paint it but didnt i just wanna screw it down but i dont know how to apply thermal compound im using AS5. What apply method. It a small chip and heatsink is painting black with Heatpad in shape of a square but in middle it had a square method of paste with Small Rectangle from where Chip was at.. can I do the small Grain of rice or no ?
