I think I have messed up, but not sure how.
I have the above message. I shall try and give all what I think is relevant info.

A few hours before, I had the machine apart. Moved my drives and changed the cabling about.

Everything was fine for hours afterwards.

I then downloaded and saved to disk Linux mint.
Booted to Linux, tried to connect to the internet. May have clicked something then.
Tried to install to HDD, realised I needed to look some stuff up.

Rebooted to Windows.

Not Connected -No Connections are available.

Tried a few things in settings unsuccessfully.
Gave up and did a system restore to 5 days ago.

No difference.

Rebooted router (and pc multiple times) changed and tested different sockets on the router.
Tested the ethernet cales on a different pc. All fine.

Went up the loft and got my old laptop down which is currently trying to set fire to my desk.

Please help, what have I done?

Happy to try everything again.

Solution
Double-check ALL SATA power and data connections. Even a slightly ajar/misaligned connector can cause problems like you are experiencing.

Try going into Device Manager and deleting the device for Ethernet and restarting, Windows will detect the device and reinstall the driver after you restart since the driver might have been corrupted on Windows 7's end.

Thank you.
I tried similar before, but did scan for hardware changes.

Just to clarify, you mean under network adapters, uninstall, yes?

In my case it seems to be Realtek PCIe GBE Fsmily Controller.
Correct?

I did this and rebooted.
Unfortunately it didn't work.

The little green light flashes once on start up. Just fyi.

What is the etiquette here please? Should I keep bumping the same thread in the hope that someone with an idea reads it or should I start a fresh one with the new info about no light and having tried deleting the driver. So that it is a thread with no replies.

Thanks.

From now closed thread:
So, I tried a fair few things.
Was completely stuck.

Then I unplugged my CD and rebooted.
All is fine.
Plugged it back in and jiggled the SATA lead.
Didn't do anything else deliberately.

Does anyone have a theory as to what might have occurred?
Would be nice to not have a recurrence.

Yes, well, I kind of thought it was a different issue.
Seems more like it is a physical issue than a software thing.
I couldn't decide whether to continue on the old thread or start a new one.
I don't know what the etiquette is.

Sounds like you are suggesting I should have continued the old one?
Shall I kill this one and continue the old one?

Maybe amend the title or something?

You should stick to one thread and be patient. I know that it’s important to you but everyone here are volunteers who just like to help people

Honestly mate, I would do a clean re-install of windows because it sounds like you’ve had so much driver install and uninstall activity it’s easy for windows to get messed up

I’ve made a lot of installers in my day and not all installers are good especially driver installers. If they mess up the install they can screw up your box

OK, apologies, I didn't mean to get the etiquette wrong.
I see other forums where people bump things and it is considered normal.
Which is why I asked about that.
I had waited a couple of days prior to that.

I do appreciate that it is voluntarily supported.
In fact I am super impressed by the amount of help that you guys give out.
I really appreciate any help.

I just then tried something else and thought it would be considered a different issue. Given that it seemed like a physical thing.

I will do a fresh install again if you think that would help.
I only redid it a couple of weeks ago though.
No other new drivers have been added.
No hardware changes since that time.
The only thing i did was use the cd rom to boot to Linux.

Well, that is interesting.
I had convinced myself that I had some sort of short going on somewhere.

But, I booted to mint (from CD) it doesn't recognise the Network.
(Ethernet light doesn't come on)
I just assume that is a driver thing. This is the first time I have looked at Linux in anyway. The plan is to learn as I play on a separate drive.

Anyway, rebooted back to windows. Same thing. No light, no connection.
Removed just SATA data cable from CD and rebooted. Connects like normal.
Reconnected CD
Rebooted back to Mint.
Mint finds Connection. I am writing this with mint OS.
That surprised me.

Edit: Then rebooted back to windows.
All connects absolutely fine.

Yes, I am powering down before touching any cables. Good question.
I have now booted to mint (on cd) three times and back to windows and it has worked each time no problems.

I haven't changed the cables since the problem begun, but a few hours before it occurred, I had definitely changed the SATA power cables about.
I may also have swapped the SATA data cables of the optical drive and the boot drive. I am unsure.

I now have something that has just started popping up for me to look into.
It states that
NVidia Web Helper.exe is corrupt and unreadable

Hmmm,
so, since the ethernet connection started working, I got the web helper.exe alert.
That then started trying to check file system each time I startup.
It states that it can't run it though.

I uninstalled geforce experience and that removed the alert.

Still trying to check file system though. (Unsuccessfully)
So, I thought that I would do a fresh install as suggested earlier.

However, when i try and boot from the disk I have used three times so far this year fine, when I get to 'choose language' my mouse and keyboard are offline.
I have checked that the usbs are plugged into 2.0 as opposed to 3.0.

OK, worked that one out eventually.
I really have no idea what the words mean, but I kind of tried stuff that came up from various internet searches.
The thing that worked for mine was:
"Storage Boot Option Control" I switched to "Legacy first".
"EHCI Hand-Off" I switched to enabled.

I wonder what changed my BIOS settings as I used the very same disk and hardware to load windows last time with no issues whatsoever.
