Not even trying to oc, but memory won't load standard settings

I have a 3.3 gHz 2500k cpu running at 4.5 gHz (on intel speed step so sometimes it spikes to 4.7 but usually stays below 2 gHz if it can get away with it).

It's loaded onto a z77 Maximus V Gene (mATX) board.

I just updated my 1600 12 gig mem kit (3x4) to a new 2400mHz 16 gig kit (2x8), but I haven't been able to get it past 1300 without encountering a constant black screen at startup.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, so I'll just put what I've done so far and hopefully someone can correct me if I've missed something.

After taking the old sticks out, replacing with the new ones (in the appropriate slots a2,a4), booting up, entering bios, switching from manual to X.M.P. - perpetual black screen. Went back in, switched back to manual, entered in the cas settings in the DRAM timing control, set the frequence at 1.65v beneath the 1.33v on the manual cpu frequency. Still, black. It's only when my computer "corrects" itself that the rig will boot up all the way. And it takes me settings way down - it took notches off my 46 enabled core values down to 44 and also downgraded my ram settings to 1.5v at 1900 (the only thing that didn't change was the timing, which is correct at 11, 13, 13, 31).

I'm wondering if it's worth trying to bump this to full 2400 or if it's a lost cause - so much as trying to OC my cpu past 4.5 gHz? In an ideal world, I would love to get my cpu up to 4.8 gHz and also have my new ram run at 2400 on its correct timings since I didn't purchase a 1900 mem kit!

Have doubt your 2500K can carry 2400, try manually setting to 1866 10-10-10-27 1.65and may have to raise the VCCSA voltage to 1.16 if good there, then try going 2133 with the other settings the same. Let us know the actual model # of the DRAM also

They are GSkill Ares. I bought them specifically because the manufacturer stated that they were gen 3 and gen 4 compatible. I'll try those settings when I get home and see if my mobo doesn't freak out.

Yes they are, but to run them you generally need a 2600K, 2700K, 3770K. I had a very strong 2500K and could only run 2133, and an exceptional 3570 which could run 2400 but it wa the exception to the rule, most 3570Ks tend to top out at 2133 also.

I finally got it to boot to desktop at 2177MHz, forgot to changing the timing settings... does that matter/should I change them? They're still sitting at 11 13 13 31. Also managed to bump up the CPU back to 46 from 44, pushing the 1.32v to 1.35. I had that setting before but it wouldn't work, I think setting the VCCSA helped with getting the memory up that high, but now AI Suite II is pinging me with 5V warnings??

Also, not sure why, but my GPU idles at 65 centigrade... My 970 sat at 38 idle (max), but this one is always above 55. The 980 Ti is not OC'd, whereas my GTX 970 was. Maybe I should ask that question elsewhere..
