Notebook doesn't recognize new memory

I installed a new stick of 1 GB ddr, and after a scan it said the slot was empty. The notebook shouldn't have to take matching pairs.

So its either bad or the notebook only takes memory from certain manufactures. So how do I go about testing the memory and finding out what manufactures I can use with this notebook which is a Compaq Presario V2000 series?

I installed just the 1 GB PNY pc2700 ddr and the notebook wouldn't boot up, and beeps sounds.

The original memory is one stick off Hynix pc2700 256mb ddr 333 mhz

Now after checking the Kingston site and various versions of my notebook it only seems to take pc2100 ddr 266, which can't be right as I already have pc2700 ddr 333 in there already.

Anyone know a quick and easy way to find out what brands and type of memory my notebook can take? I would call HP but they will put me on hold for an hour, and end up talking to someone from India who wouldn't even know in the first place.

newegg has a good search, just about any memory manufacturer will be able to help, or download your HP manual from their site.

I was never able to determine if the memory was bad, or the Notebook didn't take the PNY brand or did not support 1 GB memory sticks.

So it has been just sitting around this whole time. I'm considering buying a new notebook and getting rid of this one because of the lack of support for off the shelf memory.
