NTLDR is missing/Cannot copy file access denied

Hello,
I have recently acquired a laptop from a friend who is not using it anymore, due to the problem listed above at boot: NTLDR is missing. The easy way to bypass this problem is, of course, reinstall the OS but I was asked to back up the data in the hard disk first. This is a PATA HDD and I do not have any 44-pin connectors so connecting it to another PC is not an option. Luckily, the drive was already divided into two partitions so I tried reinstalling Windows XP on one partition. I could now access the computer's files but could not copy some of them onto an external storage medium because of the above error message: Cannot copy file: Access Denied. I tried changing settings in the 'Security' tab for all folders in the root directory of the drive. However some files still refused to copy. I tried using the Administrator account but to no avail. I cannot possibly apply these file permission settings to every single file and folder.
I had a spare Windows disc lying around which I thought I could use to repair but when I inserted it it only gives me the option of using Recovery Console (which I have no idea how to use) and not a second 'repair' option after proceeding to install which some people mention.
How would I get the data backed up to an external medium given these two problems? Repair the installation somehow or force file sharing permissions? I would prefer to boot into the original Windows XP installation, but the easier solution is the better.
Thanks in advance.

Solution
No, take ownership in the X: drive properties > Security > Advanced > Ownership > Check the case on "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"*> next select the Administrators group or your administrative account > Press Apply and OK

*Meaning everything inside the X: drive. (where X represents the original C: drive you are recovering from.)

The easiest way is with a bootdisk... download the "xpquick" file in either zip or exe and either extract or install it on a floppy disk, a USB pendrive or burn on CD. Insert it in the computer and start it up... the bootdisk contains the Windows XP boot files including NTLDR to substitute those in Windows XP and it should boot it if the ntldr file is all that's wrong.

From the Recovery Console:

Insert the Windows XP CD and boot the computer to the CD as if going to install Windows XP but... on the first "Repair" option press "R", and Enter the Recovery Console....

When you get to selecting a drive, type "1" and next enter the Administrator password... and you are in the Recovery Console.. To repair the Boot sector: Type FIXMBR and press Enter... next type FIXBOOT and press Enter... exit the Recovery Console typing "Exit" and pressing Enter. Windows XP should boot normally after that.

The "Operating System not Found" message may be related to the damaged boot sector.

Ok, I've tried that, but do I have to individually change the permissions of every single file in every single folder? I selected all the folders in the root directory of the OS partition and changed the permissions there, assuming it would apply to everything inside the folders but it still wouldn't work.

I need to copy the entire contents of the hard drive.
